....... well as far as I am concerned you can get quantity and quality.

The Quantity:

- Overall Length: 18"
- Blade Length: 12" (cutting edge)
- Steel: 52100
- Fittings: Stainless
- Handle: Stag Crown

The Quality:

- Handmade, hand finished.
- Handmade quality sheath.
- Handrubbed finish is good/user grade.
- Joints and corners are square(where they should be) and symmetrical, but could be cleaner (this will come with time and experience).
- Plunges are symmetrical.
- Grinds are superb, they would be perfect on a 9" Blade, but to get the degree of symmetry and flatness on a blade this size shows skill.

What is it you ask? A very impressive Bowie/fighter from newcomer and rising Brazilian Bladesmith Claudio Werle, who is now firmly on my radar. Only problem is that I don't think he'll stay below the $500 mark for too long:( :D

What does it look like ........... pretty fine in my eyes:

Most important of all, the knife has flow. I will concede that this is a highly subjective quality, but (imho) all the elements are working together to create a wonderful piece.

My only question is: Does he have a body of work to look at, so that we can determine if it is his norm, the result of an artistic progression, or a one time fluke?

I think that's a great looking piece - Peter's comments go for me as well. Lots of talent over there in Brazil.

Nice......but else what do you get for under $500? anything i make with a lot of change leftover...:D

Yes.Very nice.
A worthy addition to any Bowie collection.
Especially,lovers of stag.
Didn't Jeff Velasco start a thread w/pics of his work a while back?

Congrats,Stephen.

You get a great looking knife forward of the handle material, and a NASTY looking piece of crown stag aft, IMNSVHO.:p

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

It's simply a very nice Bowie regardless of the price. Typical of the quality work this group of Brazilian Bladesmith are producing. The stag could be better, but not ugly. I'm not crazy about crown stag in general, but seems to fit the overall presentation here. In addition that's a fine sheath, again typical of what this group of Bladesmith offer.

Now, now Steven, theres quite a few of us around here that aren't too pretty, but we don't call you ..... I mean "them" ... NASTY :D :p

I know Crown Stag is not the worlds favourite, different strokes, but on this knife it works, I'd have liked a better quality piece, but I do find it provides a very comfortable and secure grip, the crown expecialy adds to the confidence level when swinging a knife around.

I guess the point of this thread was to highlight that for a certain price point you can get something a bit different, good looking and well made ..... it doesn't need to be a 10" Blade, Nickel Silver fittings, and wood handle if you don't want! (Note that is not a criticisim of that style of knife, I like 'em and have a couple myself!)

Thanks for the comments.

Stephen

Hello fellas! Is good to see Claudio's work here, and the comments it received. I saw that knife several times when he was working on that, and the knife was a chalenge to him. It was his first 12" blade, the first "s" guard, and the first bowie, if I'm not wrong...
I'm sure you will see many good works from Claudio in the future.
sheers!

Hello Stephen

Thanks for the pictures of Claudio's work and for the very constructive comments. Claudio doesn't understand english, but I will make sure that he knows what you think and that issues you pointed out are adressed properly.

It is really rewarding when a collector like Stephen takes the time to help us by analysing a piece and giving out directions, specialy for those makers who can't afford to be in international shows and will have more difficulties to understand the international quality standarts.

Thanks again.

Mr Foster, very nice picture and a good descriptive text.Thank you for the same.I don't want to ask if he has a "website",may get asked to collect beanie babies:D :D .
Would like to know how you went about getting a bowie like this from him.Dealer/website/phone/snail mail, etc.
This crown stag is nice, may not be the greatest looking, but nice regardless.52100 is a good steel, if heat treated properly.Nice looking blade shape.
Is the leather sheath well constructed and sturdy enough for this size bowie?.How does the knife feel in your hand?.

..... Contact Jeff Velasco at Brazilianbladesmiths.com (see BrB above)

Leather sheath is very good, well cut, edged and sewn. It feels really good in the hand, lighter than one would expect, and crown stags are very ergonomic and tactile.

Cheers,

Stephen
