So, all i've owned are production folders and a Puma White Hunter. What do you guys subject johns knives through? I baby my knives so i don't chip, dent or otherwise ruin the edge. Just wondering what these knives can really stand up to? From the looks of them they look like beasts that will out live me. I only ask because i'd like to see pictures of what you guys do to them. I don't think i'll ever go back to folders after i receive his knife, so pictures are in order because as of right now i can't wait to get mine. I know almost nothing about 01 steel, but after talking to john on the phone it sounds like a great steel and he definately knows what he's talking about.

Don't really know about everybody else but I beat on mine. Some random shots...

Can't show ya any pics till my Photobucket is up and running again on the 8th !!!

All I'll say is that you definitely don't need to baby John's knives, give em hell...they love it !!!!!:D:thumbup:

I don't think that you will find any tougher knives than John makes, that's what got me into his knives. We have the great fortune of having some great knife makers here, if you are like most of us, you will have knives from most of them before long. Lock the wallet.:D

I just went on a little outing with my attack beagle. Had a campfire, beer, hotdogs, etc...but anyway to the point. I meant to take my camera with me to get some images, of course I realized this 2 miles from my fav camp area. I batonned alot of seasoned hardwood and pine with mine tonight, including through knots. Took some hard whacks and still going strong. Im not sure if that would be considered "rough use" but its about as rough as Ive gotten with it.

I'm not famaliar with 01 steel. John had said it can take a high hardness and it rusts less than 1095 but not rust proof. Can anyone tell me about 01 vs 1095 vs s30v or something?

During use you won't really be able to tell the differance between O1 and 1095 given an equal heat treat. Both will take a great edge, keep it for a reasonable time, and are easy to sharpen.

With Johns knives I can give them a hard days use and bring back a hair popping edge with a foam pad and 1000 grit wet/dry paper.

O1 verses S30v is apples to oranges. O1 is a "softer" more forgiving steel. During hard use your edge will tend to roll rather than chip. Which is easier to smooth out and repair by hand. It also withstands the "shock" of chopping or batoning better.

S30v is a "harder" steel. It would be more likely to chip during hard use. And is much harder to repair a damaged edge. It will hold an edge longer, but is harder to sharpen in the field unless you carry a diamond stone. (I just have a couple of squares of wet/dry in my wallet and my bag).

S30v will of course resist rust better, but I love carbon and don't worry about rust.

I use my knives, they don't have time to rust.;)

01 is supposed to be the better steel on paper but 1095 is just as good in my opinion. My Ewok has 1095 and it is sharper than my LRK(although it is ground a bit thinner). 1095 has more bite than 01 when sharpened on the same device. Also, 01 is supposed to be more wear resistant than 1095, but not by much.

EDIT: My Ewok definitely has a sharp blade, It just bit me.

1095 is my favorite steel just because it is an "old school" steel. Classic old timey knife stee. 01 is just a good, as Todd and Mr. Sogetsu have mentions... no performance difference and I'd have to say marginal if any difference when sharpening.

I have a somewhat small JK that goes with me for fishing mushrooming , canoeing...

I use a sharpmaker. Will i be able to maintain the edge with the preset 30 or 40 degree on the sharpmaker?

O1 responds very well to a diamond stone or convex sharpening, I personally don't like the edge a ceramic produces on O1, too many burring problems. If I remember correctly John runs the O1 near 60Rc and even though its a "soft steel" it will still feel like rubbing rocks together with the ceramic stones.

A fine DMT produces a crazy sharp edge with his O1.

Sooo i guess that's a no to my sharpmaker? Darn, i have no money to get a new sharpening set!
