What do you guys think about all the "pocket tool" products coming out?

With companies like CRKT and Gerber getting into the niche market of "pocket tools" like the Shard and Artifact, and smaller companies like Pocket Tool X and their Piranha model, it seems like they're starting to listen to people who want to buy such tools without having to pay insane prices.

I think it's a good thing considering there are people out there that actually want to use these tools and not just stick them in drawer and treat them as if they're collectible comic books. Hopefully more and more companies take a bit out of this niche market.

Funny stuff.
I like the idea of the larger companies coming out with these products. More the better.

CRKT has a new one coming out it has a screwdriver bottle opener and prybar also a little 1 inch blade on the end best part? $20 MSRP :D :D :D

Kinda puts a whole new perspective on 'Boutique' pocket tool makers, with limited production runs of desirable bottle openers, screw drivers and such made from sooper steels that are only available when the maker wants them to be, and selectivley sold to those more fortunate.

I hope this makes these type of tools more available to the masses.

Most [all?] of these pocket tools are way too heavy to carry on a keychain, depending how much weight you find acceptable hanging from your vehicle ignition along with all the other crap your have suspended from your keyring. My pocket space is valuable as I don't do the 'man bag' thing... and for the amount of features that come on a lot of the Atwood & Atwood knock-off's, I just can't justify the space for one.

All I have is a couple of those Gerber Artifacts... other than opening beer and prying staples out, it's really just not very useful [for me]. For the same size and weight I can carry a SAK or equivalent and have even more features [dedicated knife blade along with screwdriver tips and prying ability] in the same amount of space.

I love multitools.... but these niche market pocket pry tools strike me as gimmicky and not very useful for the amount of space they take up.

YMMV.

They made for good... cheap X-mas gifts for the guys in the family. ;-)

I like my toys. I have a small keyring with a few keys and a utili-key and a Photon.
I also have a utility ring that clips to a toy carabiner on my belt:

glowtube
Arc AAA light
Fox 40 orange
Vic. Classic in a Normark sheath
ResQMe
2 plastic tabs: supermarket & medical
Prybaby
AG Russell steel thumbnail

I don't notice the weight on the carabiner,
which rides between a multitool and my cellphone.

I eagerly await the new CRKT Eat'n Tool. Liong Mah rocks!

What's to think about?
If you want one, buy one.
If you don't like em, don't buy em.

The only folks that need to worry about opinions about them are the folks that are trying to sell them.

Had some Atwood tools for a while. They were well made & worked great, but I just ended up going back to the tried & true SAK.

I love pliers based tools, I have used them for several years and found them invaluable on many occasions. Now if only I hadn't lost my powerlock again :(
