What do you guys think about the idea of a "Group Buy" on knives? I have purchased car parts on "Group Buys". Here is an example of an online group buy for car parts:

http://www.groupbuycenter.com/main.asp

A group buy is when a retailer offers a low price or prices on a knife or knives and gets a group of buyers to put in orders through email or online form. The retailer will offer a knife at a certain price when he/she gets a specified number of buyers from this board. The retailer will give a time period when he/she will take orders, an end date to the group buy, and a delivery date. The retailer can unload a large quantity of knives and the consumer saves money.

Are there any online retailers that are willing to do a group buy?

Please propose this idea to online retailers.

Appeals very much to my Scottish soul. Very interesting concept. Can you shed a little light on what sort of price break one might expect, say compared to an on-line dealer like Roger at Bayou Lafourche, who tends to have pretty low prices on most items?

You did intend to make the REKAT Carnivore the first such purchase, didn't you? Or the Pinnacle or the S-2? Am concerned that the only way something like this could happen effectively would be on a new model, like a Spyderco, or something. Then again, just read in old thread that SPyderco's initial run is usually 1200 knives. If it is hot, then they go forward, if not, they drop it. This might be perceived as heat that really didn't exist. You know, kind of like an "ice goddess" or something.

Well, might really skew the planning of a knife manufacturer, if a lot of people were involved.

How many people does it take to set up one of these things, usually?

Would be great if it were on a knife I wanted, and with 10K members you could probably find a great number of people for most any knife.

Just call me when we're getting a group discount on Rainy Vallotton Icepics...

Sounds good to me!

Anyone actually want to go ahead and try to set it up?

If you combined this with one of the occasional BF members promotions (red sifus, gray matriarchs, stuff like that) especialy on a new or popular or unusual high-end model (when is that Rekat folding sword coming out??) It could be the kind of thing to tell our grandkids about someday. Count me in.

I would be interested depending on what the knife is. I'm also not sure how much of a discount we can expect, given that many internet knife dealers don't make much margin as matters stand. It might be better to go directly to the manufacturer and see if we can get dealer pricing directly from them with a big enough order.

This group buy thing ought to be effective. For instance, those folks at AR15.com decided to have a group AR purchase -- Got 1000 people to say "yes" and they went around to see who would give 'em the best deal. Suffice it to say that it came out to $660 shipped for what would normally be about $900.

So... quite an excellent deal. Worked for ARs, don't see why it wouldn't work for knives. :)

Ahh...the power of the Internet... and capitalism... *sniff* Almost makes me cry. =~)

Sounds like it could be quite effective. Depends upon the knife/knives selected I would think.

Keep us posted as to the status of the idea. Thanks!

AJ

I don't want to spoil the fun, but don't you think that the people who buy knives on a regular base will already have most models offered? And those who don't have the "standard knives" will not make that much use of this function, will they?

Seb

Sigh me up rogue_spear.
Does this work for any knife.
If so, I've been dying for a good price on a William Henry, or another Sebenza.
Lenny

Like Lenny, I have also been dying to get a William Henry and if this idea offered me the best chance (and price!) to get one, I would definitly do it.

I'd be very surprised if any group buys you could find would be less expensive than the prices offered by Mike and Spark at SKS but you never know. Not to mention the conflict of .... oh never mind.
Mike K.

I think that the most honourable incarnation of this would be to approach Mike Turber of 1SKS with your proposal.

He could very well judge interest, help organize, he has the power in the industry to negotiate well, and he could get a small cut that would help support this wonderful site.

If you are thinking of a Becker Patrol Machete, Grohmann Boat, Camper or Survival, Marbles Trailcraft Carver, Mission MPU, Victorinox Locksmith, Outrider or Rucksack, Livesay SOP, or Wiseman Parang, I think I may be with you.

Or, if you want to get really adventurous, you can throw your weight behind a special run of Victorinox survival knives.

I think this would be most effective in getting us brand new knives hot off of the shelves. Not to mention how many people buy a knife when it first comes out. How about the:

Wouldn't that be cool?

I'll tell you what. I'll set up a price list this weekend. Everyone, let me know what brand names you are interested in.

E-Mail them to either my address here or Service@EKnives.cc I will put together a price list of the more common knives and figure out how many need to be ordered before I finish it. Give me about a week to do this and for everyone to get me their responses. That should give us both plenty of time.

I like this idea. I'm up for it as long as enough people participate. I carry most major brand names, but will let you know if you ask for one I don't carry.

Some ideas are :
--Paul Chen swords
--Masters of Defense Knives
--Benchmade
--Microtech
--Kershaw
--SOG
--United Cutlery
--Kitchen Knives (Chicago Cutlery, Henckels)
--Case, Hen and Rooster, Schrade
--Gerber, CRKT, Cold Steel

I will check this forum, but it will be must easier for you to E-Mail them to me. Just saves us both time.

Hmmm, if you can get 1000+ people to agree on one knife, a discount will be easy after such a feat. If companies such as Spyderco produce runs in the order of 1200, then the go would be to agree on a manufacturer (smirk!!) and then ask for a run of Special Edition BladeForum knives.

The production will be easy, compared with the agreeing, count me in!!.
