This knife looks really slick and nice. The steel is VG-10 and its short enough to be legal carry where I live (Houston, TX). Of course, it won't be my EDC, but it would be useful enough for camping, outdoors, and versatile enough for self defense if it ever came to that.

What are your thoughts and opinions on this knife? I'm considering buying one.

Seems pricey for what you get. If you like the design then go for it, but I can think of other manufacturers that make better knives for camping and outdoor use. Look into BRKT (Bark River Knife and Tool), Fallkniven, ESEE, Becker/Ka-Bar.

I like SOG's other fixed blades much better as I feel there blade shapes to be more useful, they make some nice knives though, My Mini-Vulcan is one of my favorite folders.

I think the Vulcan is a great looking knife. My local knife store has it and I'd buy it in a minute if it came with a kydex sheath which would allow for discrete carry. Why Sog would sell it with a leather sheath is beyond me. It's the same mistake they made with the new Pentagon, although in that case they went with a canvas, molle compatible, sheath which is completely wrong for that type of knife. In any case I don't really see the Vulcan as a camping or hiking knife.

After selling SOG fixed blades for years, I am of the belief that SOG deliberately mismatchs their sheaths - There is no other explanation. Why they offer the Pentagon with other than a kydex sheath is beyond me - to me it is the ultimate boot/concealed carry, self defense knife: I have lost LEO sales because of the sheath.

The only one they get right is the Mini-Pentagon, which has a boot/belt clip kydex sheath.

Other sheath configurations/belt attachment configurations defy logical explanation from a view of anyone seriously carrying one of their knives in a law enforcement/miltary/civilian self defense application.

They continue to make excellent purpose driven blades; but seem to be oblivious to the value of a functional sheath. I have given up complaining to TPTB.

Sorry - Didn't intend to hijack the thread.

If it had g10/micarta handles and available as a non-tanto blade, I'd consider it at that price.

Otherwise there are other options.

Love the knife. Hate the sheath.

And yep, it is begging for different handle scales.
