What do you guys think of this khuk list?

So I just ordered my first khuk, a 18" AK from the DOTD a few days ago (just realized it's got the Royal Kami's mark on it - nice!), and I can't wait to get it. But in the mean time I've put together a list of all the HI khuks I want to buy (with $$$ obviously being the limiting factor). I've either got 2 jobs or no jobs lined up for this summer, so we'll see how far into the list I get.

In a rough order they are:
1) YCS
2) Gelbu
3) Hanuman
4) Pen
5) Ram
6) WWII

What do you guys think? I'm probably biting off more than I can chew, but they all look so sweet. :D Also, what do you all think of the sirupati, kobra and chitlangi? Correct me if I'm wrong, but those are the three lightest designs, right? I'm a martial artist, so I'd love to get a lighter 25" khuk, but none of those designs really stick out as something I'd really want to get. I guess it's that they all seem so angular compared to most of the other khuks.

Thanks all!

Ben

I'm assuming by Ram you mean the GRS? Anyway there are 2 basic sizes, one about 18" and the other about 22". I have several of both and they are among my favorites on the HI list. I would like a couple more made in the chiruwa style about 20 inches and 36 to 40 oz.

Notice you left out the AK series - you"ll want several of those also.

Yeah, the GRS. And as far as the AKs, I'm shooting for variety right now - since the one I just ordered was an AK, I'm thinking I'll get a few other types before I get another AK.

Right now I'm not even thinking about getting various lengths for each style. I don't doubt it'll happen, but I think I'll go back and get other lengths after I've already hit most of the styles I like once.

Out of curiousity, how many khuks does everyone here have anyway?

Double digits, most everybody. You will too.

One of each is a reasonable goal, one I'm working on.

Then one of each in wood AND horn. Then one of each in Villager model.

Once you "get" khukuris, you get HIKV.

Welcome aboard...

because I love my 18.5" by Kumar although for smaller work I've been grabbing the "little" 15" AK. I used to have a pair of 25" sirus but they were just too heavy for me. I keep thinking a 14" BDC or a Bilton look really handy. And, yeah, the Gelbu is beautiful, still on my wish list. Welcome and enjoy.

The Chitlangis are not so light, and may even be a bit heavier than the Sirupati.
I have two. One is about 18 1/2 or 19" and weights 22 oz. My 21" model weights in at 30 oz. These are strong, solid choppers. The smaller one chops as well as my 17" 24oz BBRS, and is a little lighter.

The smaller one would make a nice martial arts device - it is a weapon, as well as a tool.

The pix on the hi store site
don't necessarily reflect the range of each blade style available.
Seems to me that lately the khuks have
in general
gotten a tiny bit lighter & curvier.
Also noticing more/deeper fullering on some 'old-standard' blade styles.
All changes for the better for me

btw, take a look at the Malla style of most recent vintage

Remember the 15" BGRS's have been showing up fairly regularly too.

I've said for a long time I'd love to see a chiruwa BGRS. One in say, a 15 or 16" length would be a wicked little chopper, with the extra weight contributed by the full tang.

I doubt the extra weight of a chiruwa tang, as opposed to the regular full tang, (both tangs are 'full') would add much if anything at all to chopping ability. Now, if those few extra ounces were forward on the blade, that would be different.
If you had a Chiruwa AK and a regular AK of equal length and weight, theoretically the regular one would chop better- with slightly more weight forward. Further, many folks report less shock to the hand with the regular tang vs the chiruwa.

My chiruwa AK at 16.5 oz chops well, because it weighs 27 oz, not because it has a chiruwa tang.
