What do you guys think of this

On the "Design a best selling folder!" thread I posted -

"A knife very similar to the Victorinox Forester but designed for the user to disassemble and reassemble so they can swap in parts they want it to have for that day or weekend (i.e. swap the bottle opener for scissors) - thin G-10 scales with different colors available to be thrown on - one side red, one side blue or whatever you want to do - Spyderco pocket clip attached where the key ring is.

Could be less than $80 and for sure would be a lot more useful and "customizable" than 99% of pocket knives out there. Available swappable tools and handle scales will bring in additional revenue at least 40-50% of what the basic knife/package does. "

What would you guys think of a Spyderco/Victorinox collaboration? Victorinox supplies the normal tools and Spyderco provides the main blade, scales, and pocket clip. Standard scales are one red with Vic's symbol and the other black with Spyderco symbol.

I've been looking at my Vic Camper and imagining it was this model and how awesome it would be - can't imagine it not selling like hot-cakes.

Could have blades of different steel and slightly different profile available for purchase - upgrade to S30V version of standard blade for maybe $40 or get a 154CM sheepsfoot for $30. Additional G-10 scale for $10-15.

I would definitely go for this, I love SAKs but the ones I like have too many tools I don't like to want to carry, if you could change them and customize the knife to your liking, I would buy it in a heartbead.

Would the tools be a modular design, so they could *technically* be used without the handles, but for the main purpose of being expandable (or if you need 2 of the tools at the same time)?

exactly! I was explaining it to my wife saying, "we all want one this size or smaller, so it's not too heavy or too thick for day to day" showing her the Forrester and Trekker "but we would love it if it had all of these tools" showing her the Workchamp. To customize it for our daily tasks or adventures would be awesome.

A nice pocket clip and better main blade material is something I've seen/heard people mention for a long time and I'd personally love the G-10 slabs - Spyderco is the best choice for it. Could set one up for my father with blaze orange and fish scaler for all the hunting and fishing he does.

Cold Kill, not sure. My father is an engineer and former machinist who use to make his own custom knives - might see what he could think up and let him take apart one of my Vics.

If it were modular, you could easily sell it as just the knife and scale for a lower cost, and price each tool individually. Then, you don't have to pay for a tool you don't want/need. The knives could even be made as big, small, 1h open, 2h open, thumb hole, reversible stud, and various steels. People would go crazy over that, for the sheer level of variety and personal choice.

so your idea is to sell a knife with say, 2 scales, one central liner and 2 backsprings to accomodate a blade and some tools and the user can buy spare tools, liners, backsprings, longer pivot etc to expand the tool ? or just sell it with a given max tools and only swap within a given number of slots ?

either way that's a good idea but that sounds a bit complicated.

Actually, it's been done but not that well and not by Victorinox or Spyderco. It's called the Quirky.

The way the OP described it, his idea is similar to the Quirky, but different enough to be a new product. My idea for the modular design (very, very heavily based upon the OP's concept) is radically different, in that it would basically function like single or double tool SAK's that snap/otherwise secure together to make a multi-tool with scales on the ends for ease of use. Not sure how similar my ideas are to the OP, but I am about 90% sure that my concept has never been done.
