IIRC, I have 4 fixed blades with a 5th on the way. My folders get the most carry, though it is nice to have a huge fighting knife (or Rodent Waki) in the matress on both sides of the bed.

For me I mainly own both - it is very close in terms of numbers and not that far apart in dollar value either. My preference is definitely pushing towards fixed blades though - they are just more capable of being worked hard, having no moving parts and no weak points.

Until a few months ago I was not 'into' knives, I have had a SAK & a LM multitool for close to a decade - but nothing beyond that. But I became more interested in camping and decided to check out knives for that sort of usage. I discovered this forum and things flowed on from there. My first knife purchases were folders - RAT 1, Endura 4 & LM K502x. But advice here was that for harder work camping tasks the folders just couldn't handle the stresses and fixed blades are the way to go. I bought a cheapie with a 4" blade and a BK7. Since then I have gotten interested in sharpening - there is something pleasurable & satisfying about getting a knife 'shaving sharp'. I have also added a few fixed blades to my inventory - BK9, Kukri Machete, 2 x Mora. I have also ordered a RAT Cutlery Izula and the knife I'd most like to add is a Khukuri from HI.

I may have more of the fixed blade knives, but I also like and own plenty of folders too! I like my Spyderco, Ontario RAT-1 & Opinels. I also like my multitools & pocket knives. I may not be able to chop or baton with the folders like I can with some of my fixed knives - but they have plenty of other tasks that they can handle.

Folders. Gradually shifting the balance since finding out comfortable ways to EDC fixed blades and realizing that most people don't even notice that I'm carrying one, much less do they get offended by it.

It occurs to me that if this poll was in the 'Wilderness & Survival Skills' subforum then the results would be quite different. Obviously people buying knives for use in an urban environment would have much different preferences to people buying knives to use in camping/wilderness/survival situations.

Folders definately.I have about 10 folders to every fixed blade.

For me a knife means a fixed one.

I know folding things have their own value.
I have some folding knives, just like I have a folding bike.

Like knives, I mainly ride non-folding bikes.

Folders by far, but I have a bunch of fixed blades too. Mostly old Schrades, Kosters and most of the RAT line.

i own many folders but only own a kabar heavy bowie, the 4 inch knife i made and im going to make a neck knife. so folders

Almost twice as many folders. For a city slicker like myself, they are just more practical.

But it was fixed blades that got me into collecting. The Rambo III knife specifically. I was a bit of a mall ninja as a teen

Folders, as long as you don't count kitchen knives, which I don't. Almost all of us spend more time around people than we do in the woods, and you get a lot fewer hassles with folders. When I am going to need a fixed blade, I pull one out of the drawer and thread it on my belt. With folders, there's always a small one in my pocket, and others clipped to each of my outside coats.

I also note that my fixed blades follow a pattern. All but a couple have blades around 4" with drop or slight clip points. I could get along with just one, and did for many years. That pattern is far more useful to me than anything more specialized.

My folders are all over the place. Sometimes I want a small folder, sometimes a large. Sometimes a plain, and sometimes a dressy one. If I had to, I could skip the fixed blades and get by with one of large locking folders. Hadn't thought about this before, but my large locking folders are quite similar to my fixed blades.

I can count my fixed blades, but folders, Naa.;)

that would be like me picking a DVD from my collection to watch, picking an EDC must be a pain in the butt! :D:thumbup: nice collection and rack! i just store mine in pistol lock boxes...:o

I have more folders, but lately I am only buying fixed blades and it is starting to even out.

I have a # of FBs, but definitely many more folders, especially since I've gotten into slip-joints.
