My non-knife neighbor wants to buy a high school graduation gift for a nephew. He doesn’t want to spend more than $30 and he wants something that looks a little bit “fancy” since it is a gift.

I handed him a Smoky Mountain Knife Works Catalog and he asked me about this Buck knife. Anyone know about the quality of this knife?:

Buck Gent Lockback Artist Series (Trout) $29.99

“Buck continues to partner with wildlife artists Jon Q. Wright and Bob Schmidt. Their work appears as limited edition prints as well as covers of outdoor magazines. A truly extraordinary collection!”
·Lockback
·420 high carbon steel blade
·Aluminum handle with anodized artwork
·2-3/4" closed
·Certificate of authenticity, signed by the artist
·Wood box

Thanks for any help,

Buck , from time to time, offers knives from their
regular line up dressed up as "Gentlemen's Dress
Knives" From your discription this knife is from
the executive pocket knife series. These knives are
really good pocket knives for the average user.

So,while this knife is primarily a collectors knife
it can be used without any concern about quality.

I have a few executive pocket knives like this, but not the exact one you are talking about. The colors and detail are good. At 2 3/4" it is quite small and it is also quite thin. It has aluminum handles making it very light. This knife is meant to be carried in your dress pants and is used for light jobs like opening a package from UPS, not for field dressing a animal. I like these little knives and carry them to my work often. The quality of this knife is excellent in my opinion. Just my .02 worth.:)

Peter and Tightwad,

I thank you for your posts. Based on your information I have placed an order for my neighbor. This sounds like a perfect graduation present. The nephew is an avid hunter/fisherman and already has field user knives. It sounds like this would be a good knife for carrying on quick trips to town. It could also just sit on a desk or shelf (in its wood box) to be admired or played with.

Thanks again P & T.
