I thought I would share a recnt experience I had involving some rndom stranger. I was sitting on a bench in a downtown park while making some paracord accesories for friends. I had a couple people come up to check out some check my works, and they all asked if I actually made them. After the few people wnt about their day, I put my earbuds in and started rockig out. I was minding my own business while cutting and burning cord endes, when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I took my earbuds out and somE random lady started berating me with a ton of different questions. My favorite was, "What do you need that weapon for?" Kep in mind, this is my Mini Griptillian, so I would have undertood if i was using soe type of rambo knife. I calmly explaned that it was a tool, not weapon. She kept trying to tell me all knives were weapons, so I finally srrted heing a smart ***. I am fifteen and I try to be more mature than my peers, but I decided not to be right then. I tarted telling her that the purse she had was also a weapon and tha I felt threatened by it. From there I wnt on a rant about hw everything was a weapon, to which she stormed off. I am typically a very calm person, and love sharing and teaching about knives. Most peope are understanding of my knife after I explain, but this lady was just being an idiot about my "dangerous weapon".

I hope you guys enjoyed m little story about the other day. I know a lot of you people can relate. Have you had any smilar experiences?

"What do I need this weapon for?" "Why, sometimes I have the need to exact darwin awards"

:p

All knives are weapons?

Should've asked her how she prepares dinner.

In my head i would have been thinking " keep asking stupid questions lady ....keep asking " while rubbing my blade :)
But in real life I find that people just want you to know there opinions . And no amount of reason logic or just been right will change that opinion
so know your knife laws and stick to them and maybe next time do not leave a super sticky stabby death stick like a mini grip in public view just to keep life simple :)

A mini-grip? Really? Gawd, where has the world gone! What would she have done if you had a BK9?

Just wait until the thought police lady taps you on the shoulder!;)

Thanks for the laugh! :D

Some people feel the need to insert their noses where they do not belong. Such is life.

But hey what did you expect? You weren't exactly being discreet.

I was sitting on a bench in a downtown park

If you do things that draw attention to yourself you will be noticed. Some of the attention will be unwanted. The idealist isn't bothered about drawing attention to himself. The realist sees that things go smoother without the attention.

A knife is a tool, a small measure of security, a back up plan, and yes, sometimes a weapon. A knife is whatever you need it to be. Use it with the right intention, and don't worry about what others think. Good job young fella

This is a touchy subject with most. I personally feel as long as your obeying all local laws you shouldnt really have to explain yourself. With that said I also believe in showing a bit of tact even if I know all well that I am within the limits of the law. While I feel for your irritation I probably would choose not to keep the knife out on display in which passerby's may see it. Because while you very well may be a knife person your need to understand many are not. And even though YOU know you dont carry it as a weapon there are some who naturally will fear what they dont understand. Now im not saying you should carry scissors or a sak for these situations but respecting the boundries of those you will encounter in a public park will help reduce the stigma of knives. As such i would recommend only taking the knife out when you need it and putting it away when not using it. Believe it or not as harmless as we as knife people would think a mini grip is to the uninitiated it might as well be a lightsaber. At the very least even if you dont feel like showing a bit of restraint with the display of your EDC I would recommend trying to keep your cool when discussing these things with "outsiders". Because if a more understanding society is what you desire in regards to knives try to put yourself in the position of the old lady. She expressed concern, and voiced her opnion on the subject while you admittedly lost your cool and may have not left the desired impression. It sucks having to bite your tongue, or pander to those with either no understanding or desire to understand such things but you WILL get more bees with honey than vinegar. Remember, while you have every right to have that knife and use it in the way you were using it, people around you have the right to feel safe and secure when going to the park. Im just saying if you are going to openly use knives in public, it should be expected to meet resistance no matter how right you may be.

She probably at that point would be calling the cops as there are not many public parks where carrying a nearly 15" fixed blade knife is smiled upon much less legal.

Well it's obvious that you didn't look too threatening if she had the nerve to invade your space.
But I've heard it all too. People calling a regular pocket knife a switchblade or the gasp when take out a knife to cut something. Unfortunately we have to share this planet with them.
There's a funny video on you tube of a woman lecturing a guy sitting in an suv about how he's harming the environment.
I don't know where these people come from but they're out there.

Just keep doing what you enjoy and don't let them discourage you.

A couple of weeks back I had a CHP officer get into it with me about the "weapon" (Spyderco Military) he observed in the glovebox due to invasively shining his light into it after my girlfriend got out her insurance. She had made a bad lane change at 5:30am and he pulled us over. Her bad, as I had already pointed out that he was sneaking around in the slow lane behind/beside us. Anyway, despite only having seen the closed folding knife in the glovebox due to his nosiness, he then proceeded to try and lecture me that knives are "weapons by definition" and that I need to re-think posessing them. I told him that my pocket knife is legal to posess, and a tool not a weapon, at which point he threatened to give my girlfriend a ticket for the lane change if I, the passenger, did not "change [my] attitude."
He tried to tell me something more about knives; I looked away and ignored him. Good news: he got to harass citizens for a while -and my girlfriend did not get a lane change ticket due to her boyfriend sticking up to a power-tripping jackass. So everybody won.

There will always be somebody somewhere willing to give us strife over a knife.

Well you're young so you might understand.

If I had kids running around the park, I would NOT want some stranger sitting on a bench making paracord accessories with a sharp tool, it's not a work bench.

If you think that's scary, I was a local park last summer and there were a whole bunch of kids running around swinging some sort of terrifying clubs at some sort of hard ball being thrown at them by another kid! They acted as if it was some sort of game! Imagine my horror when I saw the parents of these youths actually sitting around cheering and clapping for this dangerous activity! It still makes me shudder just thinking about it.

I am lucky to have not had these experiences. I have used my knives on campus while willing to class for various things.

So te wy I made it out, I see to e in the center of a park. We ae risers in that ark for some loca concerts, so I was really out of the way. Every parent tht saw asked if I would be willing to let their kd watch, which was petty cool. Like mentioned by some to keep it out when in use and stow away when not, that is what I was doing. I was also using both hands to open it.

I apologize for spelling errors, I am posing with my Kindle Touch.
