What's in your pack for a short trip? Say a 3 day hike. Lots of posts of what we carry in a our various survival kits, but what do you carry in your pack for a general outing or hike of a couple of days on the trail?

Gregory Z35r pack
Hennessey Hammocks Explorer
The Perfect Trees Crows' Nest underquilt
Marmot Helium sleeping bag (used as overquilt)
Snow Peak 900 mil titanium pot
Brunton Optimus Crux stove

Steyr M9A1 9mm
RAT RC6
SAK Spartan
Shakespear collapsible fishing pole and minimum tackle
Klean Kanteen 27oz and Guyot Backpacker
Food: Sardines, Pasta, Rice, Squash, Oatmeal, GORP, etc...

I know. Not very "woodscrafty" but this is my lightweight setup, generally coming in well under 25lbs, water and all. My everyday bag is much more traditional. Working on transitioning to a more "crafty" setup for my solo trips. Hoping to work in a few overnighters and long weekends out of my Maxpedition Sitka with just a poncho and liner for shelter this fall. Who knows? Might even try a debris shelter.

Good thread:thumbup:

In the desert, lots of water! Forget anything else, and you may have spend an umcomfortable night, but at least you won't die. Forget the water, and you will die!

Due to knee injuries, my backpacking days are probably over. These days it is mostly day hikes, and 100+ mile per day trips on the dirt bikes or ATV's. My basic kit that I always carry no matter what is a Gortex jacket, poncho, Emerson CQC-13, Ruger SP101, basic survival kit (fire starter, signal mirror, light multi-tool, etc.), basic first aid, toilet paper, and an appropriate amount of water. As the weather gets colder and/or we head into the mountains, add in layers of clothing to suit the conditions. Actually, on the bikes and ATV's, you are already wearing a helmet, chest protector, gloves, motocross pants and boots, so you just need an insulation layer underneath (various weights of long underwear) when it turns cold.

ONE item.

Small excerpt from my backpacking (pack) checklist from my last trip. This is just what's in the pack, not what I'm wearing or carrying on my person:

Gregory Z65 pack
Camelbak water bladder
Hammock (Warbonnet)
Sleeping bag
Sleeping mat (Thermarest)
Sil-Tarp
550 Cord (~50 feet)
Figure-9 rope tension devices (2-4)
Ground Hog Stakes (4-6)
Gabage bags (large, 2 each)
Ziplocks (quart, gallon - 2 each)
Sawyer 4 liter gravity bladder filtration
Nalgene 3qt collapsible water container
Collapsible bucket
MSR MIOX
Nalgene 1qt water bottle
Nalgene nesting mug (Snow Peak, Ti)
Primus omni fuel stove & fuel
Double wall coffee mug
Stainless bowl
Vargo Scork
Pack grill
Food Bag (Freeze dried, snacks, drink mixes, etc.)
2qt pot/lid (pot gripper handle)
Small FAK
Insect repellent
Fire kit (Bic, Strikeforce, Tinder, matches)
Folding saw (Kershaw/Bahco)
Large knife/chopper or axe (BRKT Golok)
Trowel, long handled…Titanium
Hygiene Kit (Toothbrush/paste, Dr. Bronner's soap)
Wash cloth
TP (in Ziploc) and/or travel pack of baby-wipes
Zebra LED Headlamp (AA)
Extra batteries (2xAA lithium)
Knot tying card
Bushcraft book (USRSOG)
Utility wire
Small binoculars
Emmrod Fly Rod with Orvis reel (compact fishing kit)

Packed Clothing
Softshell rain jacket
Microfleece pullover
Smartwool long sleeve zip-neck shirt
Polartec silk-weight long underwear bottoms
Woolsocks (extra pair)
Fleece watchcap
Greier kangaroo leather gloves
Chaco sandals (?)
Cravat

Edited to add that I'm fortunate to be in an area where I can filter water at several locations and where we camp. In Texas, there were several places where we had to pack in with a lot of water weight and still do the "water-shuffle" with containers at nearby streams (most places don't like you camping too close to delicate, remote water sources.

My other challenge is food. I usually pack most of the food for the family, so I'm stuck with a few pounds more than I would take solo or even just with my son.

Good post and I need to get some pictures up!

I like this post. I think having a list is the key that way you can check to make sure your taking everything you need on a tri[p. The one thing I always carry is heavy duty Trash bags you can always find a use for them .

here's a recent four day load out

OK let's say a 2-3 [2 night trip] into the mountains of the Pacific NW in fall.

high energy food and probably freeze-dried meals for dinner
MSR windpro stove
MSR Titan 2 litre pot
Snowpeak Ti cup
MSR Titan spoon
Therm-a-rest Neoair
Feathered Friends Ibis sleeping bag
Spyderco Military
small, but dialed FAK
sometimes a filter, but if in the mountains usually just Katadyn water tablets
Platypus water bags
tent: Bibler Fitzroy or Mountain Hardwear Approach or sometimes a bivy sac
small bag with matches, fire steel, spares, paracord, basic repairs, whistle etc. [that kind of stuff].

Garmin 60 CSx
Map
Sunnto compass
Patagonia DAS parka
hat
lightweight gloves
Patagonia Ready Mix Jacket or Houdini Jacket or Gore-Tex jacket if possibly required

Patagonia Guide Pants
Smartwool Socks
Patagonia Capilene underwear/shirt
May have/require some climbing gear.

I think that's about it. Of course, I bring a few personal hygiene items as well. All fits into one of two packs: Dana Designs Astralplane or Arc'Teryx Naos 55. The latter is a small pack, so it requires more of a "go light, freeze at night mentality..."

If you're serious about the outdoors, always buy the lightest, highest performing, multiple use type gear you can afford. Laboring under a heavy pack for short trips is horrible and unnecessary.

mtwarden, looks like you have really minimized your load, a 7# pack is impressively light. What's the pack weigh with food+water?

tent
golite xanadu 1 tent
15+ bag Rei.
golite quest pack

snowpeak mini fuel cans.

platypus drinking bags.
1 fiji water bottle
bic lighter
1 gallon zip lock bag. (trash bag)

so when it gets down to food. I plan my meals as such. I put my one days worth of food in a bag and vacuum seal it. I only eat the contents of that bag that day. this way I do not over eat or under eat for the day. this allows me not to have to carry extra food out.
breakfast. oatmeal,or ramen noodles
snack. a bar of some sort.
lunch, bonk bar, shotblocks or sportbeans.
later snack. dehydrated fruit, bar.
dinner. mountain house meal.

my pack weighs about 25 pounds with food and water.
