Well i'm almost 18 and finally going to buy my car soon. everyone's questioning seems to be what's in your pockets but I haven't seen anybody ask what's in your car. So I would like all your opinions on this so that i can start to build my car up to where it should be. so far i've gotten seat belt cutters easily available ( i think the new little benchmade ones should be best), prob a good 4 cell mag light, first aide kit, i would like to keep an extra blade in the car too(maybe a used benchmade or something like that) so what do you guys think? what do you carry? thanks.
Trevor

carry a mag lite in all my vehicles, and my most necc piece of equipment in my car?? my valentine one radar detector of course lol

sifu

Mag Lite that uses 4 D batteries. Blanket, even a one use camera (for those liars who try to get away with insurance). In where I live, probably keeping a blade in a car is not legal, and quite frankly not needed when the mag lite is only inches within reach.

I carry a lot of rust actually... The sun roof on my VW Bug was leaking badly and with all the junk that piles up on the floor I didn't notice the 1/2 inch of water... :(

But what SHOULD be there is a bit different. Get a good first aid kit, a fire extenguisher(I keep one under my seat after my last wiring problem filled the car with smoke), flares(get a few for the survival kit, too - great for starting fires or when you can't at all), some spare parts and a tool kit(VW owners know to keep a few spare fan belts), and the obvious - knives! I usually have some in the glove box, a few floating around on the floor and trunk, a few in the toolbox, and a few others that make an occasional appearance, plus whatever I keep in my gear bags that stay in the car.

Aside from the aforementioned first aid kit, fire extinguisher, maglite, & seat-belt cutters (actually I don't have a seat-belt cutter but I've been meaning to buy one)--I also have:

-a toolbag complete with screwdriver set, ratchet/socket set, etc.
-jumper cables (haven't needed them myself but a lot of my friends have been thankful for that)
-an extra flashlight clipped to my seatcover (can't remember what brand it was--it was a gift) along with the white photon II on my keychain and the green ASP LED that I wear around my neck
-extra batteries for all the flashlights
-my 21" ASP tactical baton
-an ATS34 Gerber EZ-Out also clipped to my seatcover within reach
-some keychain DMT sharpeners
-50ft. of black paracord
-tire gauge
-canteen of tap water along with a bottle of purified water
-monocular

That's all I can think of right now but there's definitely more than that. I know I'm probably overdoing it, but I hate to be without what I need when I need it.

Personally I don't carry a seatbelt cutter becuase I don't wear my seatbelt to begin with.
What I do carry is a large black altered marines knife(no markings), first aid, flashlight, all weather clothes and a number of other survival items. Sometimes also a Samurai sword in the trunk.

It is almost as import to kit out the car with survival items as it is to do the same with where you live. Incase of an "armageddon" type event taking place, the 15 minutes it takes you to get back home will seem like an eternity due to the ensuing chaos and insanity that will take place on the streets. Be prepared.

I've got a truck, with a toolbox..so lots of stuff.
Up front:
Leatherman PST
Leatherman Wave (if I'm not wearing it)
Becker BK7 Combat Utility
3D Maglite
Streamlight Stinger
26" ASP baton
first aid kit
roll of 550 Cord

toolbox (my Good Samaritan gear;)):
2 gallons of water
2 gallons of antifreeze
a case of oil
brake fluid
transmission fluid
WD-40
2D flashlight
2AA flashlight
2 funnels
rags
Hammer
Crowbar
Hydraulic Jack
Windbreaker
Gore-Tex pants

screwdrivers
jumper cables
duct tape

There is some great info. already posted, just try to work
on someday haveing just able everything posted here. :)

Some people call this a B.O.B. (Bug Out Bag) and if
you search here for that you'll find some info. and
here is a pretty good site: http://www.stormloader.com/plainsman/bobkits.html

As for me it's pretty simple my B.O.B.! :)

but the simple list is this 3D Mag-Lite
(4D are ill-legal some places, if used in a fight:rolleyes:)
100' Para-cord (Just some rope basicly)
a Multi-tool (I like Leatherman's)
some food ("energy-bars")
a heavy-blanket (wool is good)
and I carry my Becker BK2
WATER!

If you can work on your car then a Tool-Kit, and Oil Etc..

My car kit is fairly extensive, but not too bulky -- gotta fit groceries in there, too.

In the console:
Leatherman Wave
SureFire 6P w/red flip up lens cover (map reading without killing your night vision)
Matches
Bluegrass CDs:)

In the glovebox:
Marine fire extinguisher (ABC rated)
SureFire 9N

In the trunk:
Hiking boots (if my car dies, I'll probably be wearing dress shoes. You don't want to walk a mile or two in snow wearing thin loafers)
Jumper cables
Gas can
Funnel

Under a cargo net:
Pack containing work gloves, road flares, magnesium fire starter, chem lights, chemical hand warmers, Atwater Carey Expedition first aid kit, bottled water, power bars, Benchmade Griptilian, 100' of 550 para-cord, waterproof matches, rain poncho and an extra pair of socks.

Under the pack:
8'x10' tarp (emergency shelter)
Emergency blanket
Folding camp shovel
Cheap air compressor w/flat-fixing goo

On me at all times:
Cell phone
Zippo lighter
ASP sapphire keychain light
Sebenza or Spyderco Lum Chinese folder
About $100 in cash
Pre-paid phone card

Should be enough to see me home .

I drove a 72 VW bug for 6 years. Floorpan rust looks bad but is easy to fix. A decent Vdub mechanic can replace both pans with the body on in a day or so (they make half and full pans that can be welded or riveted into the car). Take care of the rust before it extends into the heater channels. Those are a major structural items (as is the center tunnel). If those rust, you might as well junk the car unless it's a very collectable model. It's an expensive repair. I had a half pan installed on the driver's side where leaking brake fluid caused my pan to rust right under where my feet rested while driving. The repair was only $100 or so plus the half-pan.

Regarding the fan belts, I never broke one, but I did tweak a few gen pulleys by overtightening the belt.

Fun cars, wish I still had mine...

I keep the following:

Flares
Small Shovel
Jumper Cables
Bungies
Brake Fluid
Oil
6D Maglight
Sleeping bag
B.O.B with water, food, tarp, emergency blankets, First Aid kit, and several firestarting tools.

There's probably more, but that's all that I can recall offhand. Most of it is stored in the spare tire well. The BOB and sleeping bag take up little space.

I didn't include a knife because I never leave my house without a knife of some sort. Even if I can't take it to my final destination, I'll take it with me and leave it in the car.

With some of you carrying all this stuff. Where do you put it? I saw a toolbox and spare tire space. I use an electricians bag. Made of canvas, very large mouth to the bag and handles on top.
In it I have Home made first aid kit (made with my Cub Scouts), jumper cables, 12volt air compressor, ratchet set, blanket, some WD40 and a Rescue Jr (In Orange).

Although I carried Mag's for years and really like them, I would recommed high impact plastic flashlights like Streamlight or Pelcian, etc. if you live anyplace it gets COLD.

I know from personal experience that at 5 degrees (F) with a breeze, your hands freeze after holding a Mag even a very few minutes, even with really good gloves. Additionally, if you set one down and later try to pick it up with damp hands (some repairs, etc. cannot be done with gloves on...) it's like the old tongue on the pump handle routine..

I also carry insulated overalls and pac boots during the winter, and lots of water (2-3 gal) during the summer, in addition to all the appropriate tools, equipment, etc. listed in the other posts.

I second that. I have a Pelican and stiff kiss within my arm's reach and CS shovel in my trunk... I found that to have 50ml of some spirit is quite handy as well ;)

Leatherman Pulse and a mini maglight. I keep most of my stuff with me; either in a fanny pack, gym bag or courier bag. Too many cars get stolen around here.

I keep a Leatherman Wave in the glove box.
I also keep a disposable camera with film in case I'm in an accident for the purpose of photo proof.
A lot of other stuff (i.e., cell phone, whistle, mini-flashlights, knives, etc.,) are in my waist pack on me. If I have a folder that clips tip-up, I may clip it to my seatbelt (less likely to fly off on impact than if the folder is designed to clip tip-down). I can extract it with a pulling motion near my right-side abdomen.
