What do you prefer?

I have only handled two knives with a disk, but I much prefer the disk to the stud as far as function goes. I think the thub stud looks a little better.

Thanks for all the input. I think I am going to go
with the thumb stud. Maybe not as functional as the
disc but more pleasing to the eye.

Thanks, Michael

Here's my order of preference:
  • Hole (ala Spyderco/Lum/Boguszewski et al)
  • Disk
  • Slot (ala Mayo)
  • Stud
  • Nail Nick (ala Bob Lum)

With that said most of my knives have studs followed by holes, slots, discs and nicks respectively. Just more makers doing studs now..

I've only handled folders with thumb stud. So please enlighten me.

What is the advantages of thumb disc ?

What can a thumb disc do that a thumb stud can't ?

Thanks.

Beluga, I personally don't see a specific advantage to any of the designs, IMO it falls into the personal preference category.

Many may argue the speed of one over, the ability to manipulate one better than another with gloves or when your hands are wet, and there are a lot of valid points to each side.

To be honest I can't tell you why I like one better than to other besides just how easy they are for me to use. I have a fat thumb and some knives like my AFCK (disc) or Wegner (hole) are easier for me to open than my other pieces.

Of course none are bad enough that I don't/won't own them ;)

If I'm carrying the knife clipped to my pocket, I like the Spydie hole. If I'm carrying the knife in my pocket with the clip removed, I like the thumb stud. It may be just me, but the thumb stud on a knife with tip-up carry seem to snag on my pocket as I take it out. Speed of draw isn't much of an issue with my Victorinox Tinker, though, which I carry alot. Like someone else said, it's a matter of personal preference as much as anything else.
