I just got my HEST yeasterday and one of the first things I did was open it up and see what I could fit in there. Not enough room for a useful amount of paracord. I tryed folding up a $20 in there but it took up too much room and I can't see it being as useful in the bush. When I am cold and hungry, I don't think a $20 will be able to buy anything out there.

So I stuck in 6 of those one inch candle matches, and six REI storm proof matches. I might buy a fire steel that can fit in there, but I can't see what else. Maybe Iodine tablets? A needle and suture(spelling?) kit? Maybe smoke screen pellets. I need some I ideas so I was woundering what you guys (and ladies) carry in your HESTs.

Hey Minnesota! I'm in Corcoran. Glad to have you here.

I put several REI matches in mine too.

I went with a mini firesteel from: http://www.survivaltopics.com/gear/ I also have about half of a WetFire wraped in foil, a fishing hook, sinker and some fishing line. Before I had a small candle and dryer lint, but changed it our for the WetFire. That stuff takes a spark nicely. I also have a cord lock compass from SafeZone on the paracord on the sheath. Both that doesn't really count. But it is an easy way to have one more essential item. http://safezonellc.com/clcompass.html. I finally remembered to added two small washers on the sheath to have something to unscrew the handles. Soembody posted that idea and it works great.

I just have mine filled with cash. Maybe the next one RYP comes out with will be big enough to hold krugerrands...

Very interesting Ideas. I will definatley get some hooks and line in there. Wet tinder sounds good as well. I tryed some for the first time. Great stuff, and reusable.

The firestarter from the RAT fits perfectly. Just unscrew it with a Phillips. Wrap it in wax paper. Or you can put a small diamond sharpener in there. You can't pack a week of clothes in there. :))

The Wetfire starters are only good for about 2 weeks once you open them up. They need to stay sealed in the wrapper up till the time you use them.

I used a dremel to hollow out the scales a little more, it allows for a little more storage but not enough for a weekend !! ;)

Thanks for the info. I must have missed that in the fine print. Back to lint, cotton ball and a little vasoline. That still fits in there well.
