Are there various grades of material for this (ie fine, very fine, etc)? what are the best brands/products for various hand-rub blade finishing? i plan on hand-rubbing a satin finish & don't have a clue how to do it.....holler. thanks.

p.s. - anyone know a good place to get leather for making sheaths in southern california? i live in the san fernando valley.

I'm sure others will chime in with various, different methods, but I know several makers who use sandpaper up to various grits and then blend the finish in with a fine Scotchbrite pad.

I use wet dry ssandpaper myself, and up to 2000grit takes you just short of mirror finish. Someone here also uses up to notebook paper then, which is some insane grit equivalent, not sure what.

Course, in making wooden flutes, another poster on board said that the human hand is supposed to be around 6000 grit. Probably a bit higher grit for those pansy IT types(he types fromthe network admins office) or lwoer grit for those who actually get out and work, or swing a hamemr. ;)
