I'm pretty cheap, but I don't like duds or fouling. Trying to pick a good ammo for regular practice.
What do you guys use?

I usally shoot CCI mini mags. Compared to other .22s, they are a bit high. So sometimes I'll shoot Federal. They shoot almost as good, but much cheaper.

Wolf Match Target.

Difficult to find, stinks, but pretty clean and extremely accurate.

Remington Thunderbolt or Golden Bullet. Depending on what WalMart has on sale when I buy.

Almost all of my .22LR shooting is done with a Ruger 22/45 to 'warm up' before combat practice with my 1911's. The Ruger was designed to be the same manual of arms, and it's close, it helps me settle down.

However, when we go out to practice, we go through LOTS of rounds. I use a Dillon Square Deal for the .45 ACP rounds, and that machine is never switched over.

So for .22LR's, I have to buy bulk, and like yourself, I like clean burning rounds and no stoppages.

Believe it or not I go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart and I buy Federal .22 'copper splashed' rounds packed in the 550 round boxes. I get them for about 9 bucks a box, it's even less during sales or during 'buy two' promotions.

The nice thing about copper splashed is tht they don't have that gooey wax feeling of most .22LR's and they can double as hunting rounds in my Ruger 10/22.

I would buy several boxes and see what your weapon likes.

They don't have to be expensive. However, I've had some .22's that just didn't like certain ammo.

Once you see what it likes buy it in bulk.

If you're looking mostly for plinking the boxes from Wal-Mart are hard to beat, especially on sale.

Federal (when I buy in advance) or American Eagle (when I buy at the range). They are cheap, but arent bottom of the barrel crap and everyone should carry at least one of them.

I will NEVER shoot Winchester Xpert .22 again. That **** jammed every 4 rounds in my Marlin. Only reasonable response I got was that it was too weak to cycle a semi-auto. If its too weak to cycle a .22 Semi-auto then what in the hell would make me think that its even worth using in a bolt action. A weak load is a weak load.

I mostly use the big bulk boxes of Remington stuff. It's cheap and usually works well in my guns... Although there was one box last year that had a few duds.

I also like playing with Aguila stuff... Lots of specialty ammo. Especially the ultra-quiet powderless Colibri rounds :D Almost totally silent out of a rifle, pretty quiet from a revolver(like an air rifle).

As with all weapons, it's a matter of finding ammo that properly cycles and is accurate with your particular gun... They all behave differently.

I tried the Aguila sub-sonic sniper ammo(or something like that) once. The stuff key holed every shot at 25yds. I read later that, that stuff only works in barrels of a certain length and rate of twist. If it's any different, it won't work. I had, had high hope for this stuff. I have a Ruger 10/22 that I have turned into a tack driver(it's the first time I ever did anything like that to a rifle and I' proud of it). It will shoot a 10 shoot group that can be covered with a dime at 25yds!!!!!!!!!

I live in the NYC area and all the Kmarts and Walmarts do not carry ammo anymore. Is this true of only my area or what ? I buy the bulk splash at Outdoor Sportsman but they charge about 40 % more then I use to pay at Walmart.Thanks.

My old bolt-action Marlin is a goat & will eat anything. If I'm just knocking beer cans off of a woodpile, then I shoot whatever is cheapest at Wallyworld. I have 500+ rds of Winchester in an old gift tin that I've had for over 10 yrs. That will probably get used up soon.

Remington Thunderbolts. Works great in my Remington 597. I didn't see any differences when I compared them to the more expensive CCI offerings.

these guys all have great info on .22's . go to rimfirecentral.com for more than you'd ever want to know about .22's . theres even a sticky that lists ballistics for tons of diffrent factory ammo. (:

Mostly Remington Thunderbolt or Winchester Wildcat. It's inexpensive and my 22/45 will only feed lead bullet for some reason.

I was told that many ranges banned Wolf because they had problems with exploding ammo.

Is this true for their rimfire rounds as well?

My marlin bolt action will eat everything. For inside 50 yards I've been fairly happy with remington bulk pack golden bullets HP's, and CCI mini mag HP's. Neither shoots for **** at 100 yards though, so I'm going to go buy a box of just about everything at the store this spring and see what it likes.
CCI CB longs are kind of fun for close range quiet plinking, don't group too well but they're good for 20 yards or so and the bullet hitting the target is louder than the gun going off. Remington subsonics are very accurate and not too loud either.

I used to buy the hotter loads like the mini-mag, until I read an article on .22 accuracy in Shooting Times (I think) a few years ago. They rated the standard Remington HP as the most accurate .22 ammo. I ran some tests and came to agree and ever since, I have used it. WallyWorld sells 550 round boxes for under $10.00.

I use them in rifles (10-22, and Rossi 62) and pistols (Ruger Single Six and 22-45) and am satisfied with results in each.

My 10-22T just loves CCI standard velocity.
It will put a magazine full into a thumbnail sized
group at 50 yds.

Long discontinued/ rare Norinco target for my Clark customized match Ruger MK II. .90 per 50 rounds! At less than 1/10th the price of ELEY match rounds!!! RWS Target works well also. But a bit too waxy.

Most Remington hi velocities from my Beretta 22A for plinking. CCI Stingers for business.

CCI Blazers for my Ruger 10/ 22 or Marlin Papoose. Mini Mags for animals.

RWS Match bolt action gets fed Lapua Matchmasters only.

China- only in NYC. :( :barf:
