What do you think about the Böker Plus Rold Black knife?

Hello everyone!

I'm searching for a good, medium sized knife under 100$. I know, my budget has its limits.
The knife would be in an EDC "survival" bag, with other wood processing tools. I don't want to baton this knife, but it must be capable of batoning in the case of necessity. I would use it as gentle as I can.

I've found a Böker Plus Rold Black knife on sale. The price of the knife is under 100 USD now.
I'm barely think that I can find a more appropriate knife than this (in that price category).

I found as much positive as negative reviews. Somebody broke the blade, someone else batoning it over 1 year without trouble. The sheath is terrible by the way.

What do you think?

I think I've carried and used knives for 60 years and have never had to baton with one.
I also think D2 is not an appropriate alloy for batoning.

For knives you can baton with that are under $100, you would be better off with one of the KaBar Becker knives or a KaBar Jarosz Globetrotter

Also, Böker Plus (their better stuff apart from the traditional Böker Manufaktur stuff) offers at least four dedicated bushcraft knives (under 100 $ or barely above). You might look into those. The Böker Knives site retails also other bushcraft knives by Fox, Real Steel, etc. Take a look and rule out D2. It's not an impact steel. Great cutter, though.

VG 10 not sure when it first came along, but after having to sharpen.my buck 110 2 - 3 times a week it was gold!! Still carry my Al Mar sere2k d/a. few times a week!

I thought D2 was a tool steel, which I thought was fine for batoning ?
I have a Boker Rold in D2 with black blade. I have not used it yet but if it don't hold up to batoning, it ain't worth spit IMHO.

Did they have bad or improper heat treat ?

read more... any of @Larrin posts which talk about toughness, and d2 usually scores around 5 ft-lbs which is quite low overall

cpm-m4 reaches up to 15
and the amazing aeb-l can reach 40

for batoning without fear of breaking/snapping/chipping you want steel with a decent toughness & heat treatment with a good temper

the good news is; mora companion heavy duty is about $25 and the steel they use is very tough and is the most common bug out bag knife recommended in these forums
