What Do You Think About the Kershaw Tyrade?

Hello everyone,

I have recently found a new knife, the kershaw tyrade. I think this is finally the one that i am going to buy. I have been trying to decide for a while now, and the deadline is Christmas. The first choice knife before the tyrade was the bm 710 or the ZT0200. IF any of you own or have handled the tyrade tell me about it. I know it is a big knife that may be heavy to carry around in my pocket while wearing lose pants. But what draws me to this knife is the fused blade, affordability(70ish dollars), and the durable sturdy design by ken onion. I am concerned about two major aspects of the knife though, The liner lock and how solid it locks up, can anyone tell me how solid the lockup on the tyrade is, and how well the liner lock fares under heavy stress? Thank you

I had a Titanium Tyrade and the ZT 0200 at one time. The blade and overall shape are almost identical. The ZT has a thicker, rounded handle. I haven't owned a G10 Tyrade, but it seems like it is pretty much a thinner ZT for less money.

The 710 is pointer than either and probably a better slicer than the Kershaw or ZT. If you don't have an AXIS lock yet, it is worth trying.

I have a G-10 Tyrade and the liner lock is very solid and thick. The blade opens with authority and locks up like a vault. It seems like the frugal man's ZT.

I have both the G10 Tyrade and the ZT200. I can't say that the Tyrade is in any way inferior to the ZT, it locks up equally well. It's thinner hence easier to carry. The ZT still looks more cook though!

The G-10 Tyrades are actually an anomaly. They were developed to use the leftover blades from the original titanium Tyrade project. Otherwise these knives would be selling for a much higher price than you find them. This makes the G-10 Tyrade one of the, if not the, best deals going today!!:thumbup:

The liners are ~.080" thick and made from hardened steel. Just like the liners on the ZT0200.

As far as loclup goes, I can only comment about the 6 I have. I have 2 black, 2 orange, and 2 tan models and all 6 have excellent lockup. I wouldn't hesitate to use any one of them!

Just like the titanium Tyrade, the G-10 Tyrades are a limite edition of knives and once gone there will be no new ones coming out. Better grab one while you still can!:thumbup::)

I'll have you know you just drained my wallet.:p

I've been hemmin' and hawin' about it for a month now telling myself to "wait till next month, wait till next month..."
Upon reading your post, I couldn't get to New Graham fast enough.
I got THE last G-10 model. It was the black model. Actually, it was the last G-10 Tyrade (of any color) they had aside from the Titanium one (which is too rich for my fixed income blood).
So, now I have a new Tyrade coming in the mail. Oh well, eating is overrated anyway.:o:foot::)

I love Kershaw's knives, but the Tyrade just isn't for me. It's too... I don't know. The blade length and materials are great, and the overall construction is excellent. The price is right. The pocket clip is a bit funky, but a Dremel can fix that.

It just isn't a design I like. The blade shape is bit too wide for me I guess, I just can't put my finger on it...

Built like a tank. But the handle seems to be made for larger hands, my hand and fingers got lost in the front finger choil, which unfortunately made it uncomfortable for me to use.

that is some good news to me, I have very large hands, and i think the choil will suit me perfectly

I love mine.

Fit and finish: 100%
Lockup: 100%
Solid lockup under use: 100%
Good heft and feel when using: 100%
Proper grippiness of the g10: 100%
Edge holding under real use: 100%
A great feeling hand full of knife: 110%

If I had more dough (bought the JYDII combo at the same time) I would buy another one of these.

thganks for all the info, one more questiopn, do you personnaly think that this knife can take heavy abuse, and is the blade suited more for heavy work , or can it also do finer cutting?

To me, it is quite well suited to regular "knife" duties. It won't be good to baton a 4" log, but it will do fine to baton a 3" log with proper technique. It will cut a ton of hairy little fuzzies for tinder. It should do all manner of routine cutting with no problem at all as the bank vault lockup and the ease of sharpening make it a real winner. I can't imagine needing more than this on camp/hike duties or for my needs, not much of anything else.

It is solid as a rock, and when sharpened properly cuts like a razor and the D2 holds its edge quite well.

ease of sharpening, is it really easy to sharpen? I have some experience with limited sharpening materials and limited knives to sharpen but thats a plus for me

It actually is easy. The blade isn't full flat ground, but sabre. BUT... the sabre grind is so wide it feels to me like a flat ground knife. Flat grinds are easy to sharpen on just about anything.

Since mine came with a good edge, all I have done to this point to sharpen is to touch up the edge with my chef's diamond rod. Don't let the D2 scare you; it's hard, but the diamond sharpeners eat it quite well. Even my old Lansky with man made stones (AO) eats it with some patience.

Speaking of that type of sharpener, since this knife is saber ground and not full flat, it will easily fit into different sharpening devices (like Lansky, Gatco, DMT, etc.) since you have a flat spot on the back of the blade to hold it in the clamps.

Got my Tyrade today.:D
Well, technically, it was yesterday. (Dec. 11th.)
I'm very happy with it. Same heft as the Manix with similar grip qualities.
And, like the Manix, it's built massively. Impressive in all aspects and came VERY sharp.
I'm looking forward to EDC'ing this beast for the next couple of months.

I just today received my tan G10 Tyrade and just love this thing. Honestly I doubt I'll ever really use it for anything - it's too heavy for everyday carry for me - but it's a joy to hold and play with. I have an orange one coming from knifeworks and that should be just as much fun! This is an amazing knife for the money.
