Look at the specs for the knife which you wrote above.See where the blade material line is? 420 J2 thats the problem right there in a nutshell.

United Cutlery imports the lower quality stuff from Taiwan. CRKT produces in Taiwan, but there products are high quality. If you want a good knife but are on a budget, get CRKT stuff.

Congrats on asking on the forums before purchasing!!!! That knife will make a good wall hanger if you like the looks and have appropriate space on your wall. But as pointed out, since the "steel" is 420j2, some (i.e. many!) people here wouldn't even consider it as being a knife

This certainly not a knife I would care to go with, but there is nothing wrong with it. The $28 full listed retail is a fair price for a 420J knife. You should be able to do a bit better on the price by shopping around.

The steel while certainly on the low end of cutlery steels can take a working edge. The relatively low carbon level will make it highly corrosion resistance and require alot of sharpening. Its a good entry package for the novice knife collector.

These cheap knives will give you plenty of practice with a sharpening stone while allowing you to try different knife designs at a low price.

But, don't buy too many of these. One or two designs to test the design benefits and develop some skills would work well. Afterwards, you would want to save up for your first quality knife (either a top of the line production knife or an entry level custom knife).

Welcome and have fun.

You might want to take a look at Columbia River Knife & Tool's (CRKT) Stiff KISS (Keep It Super Simple) line of knives.

They are available in either tanto or drop point blade styles and include Zytel sheaths with multiple carrying options. One piece construction of AUS-6 steel. You should be able to find them for $20 or less..good hunting and let us know what you choose!
