What do you think of Helle knives?

I ordered a Brakkar blade to make myself a new knife. It's about 5" but from the picture the stick tang looks fairly narrow.I was wondering if the Helle knives would stand up to light battoning.

I have made several stick tang knives so build quality should not be a problem. The tang would also run full length of the handle.

I have done light battoning with my felkniven. Never had a problem. It came very sharp and whittles great. It is not flawless (fit and finish), but a solid performer. I would def. recommend Helle as an all around good knife for outdoors use!

Enjoy!

Helles are great. They sell blade blanks and the accomplished do it yourselfer can make quite the show piece for use and bragging options

Helle's are great. I have a few from Ragweedforge.com and they are solid scandi knives that take and hold a great edge. I batton with them and have no more issues than any other scandi edge.

Helle Yeah!

My Helle Eggen is one of the sharpest out-of-box knives I own. It beats a lot of more expensive "bushcraft" knives by far in quality & function.

The only thing against Helle blades is that they are typically thin -while this actually helps their performance, too many Americans' think that an outdoors knife must be thick as a prybar.

My Helle Futura is sharp, but I can bend the blade back and forth with my bare hands! I am pretty sure that mine is defective and not representative of Helle though.

If I wanted to get a Helle blank and use it to replace the blade of my Futura, would that be a pretty easy task?

It looks like I could just grind off the peened end of the tang where it protrudes from the buttend, remove my sketchy blade, and slip in a new blade (with a bunch of JB Weld or something for good measure).

Foilist: Helle has a lifetime guarantee on their knives, so you may want to consider contacting them. As to replacing the blade, it shouldn't be too difficult. I do think they use epoxy in the handles, aswell as peening some tangs. It may be removed easily, or it may ruin your knife.

On topic: Helle are pretty good knives. I'd say that it can take almost whatever you throw at it. But i think everyone needs to remember this: Nordic knives are mainly meant to cut things. They are not meant to pry, chop or baton. Us nordic people have axes and prybars for that.

I think i have a Helle knife that i don't use. Maybe i should see about making a giveaway?

I have the Nying and Hellefisk(filet knife) and the Nying has seen quite a bit of use this year. It is a very different knife and I don't think the handle will work for everyone but it works very well for me. I really like the quality and fit and finish on mine were very good. I, sadly, only caught one fish this year(so far I keep telling myself:)) so the Hellefisk did not get much of a work out. I was pleased with the performance, though different from your typical North American filet knife. I like how comfortable the cork handle is...and it floats too.
I have checked out a number of other Helle's and they have all been of good quality. I don't think you can go wrong with one.

not to hijack..but since we are on the hell topic...I have a helle symfoni..Does anyone know how far the tang goes down?

I had one of those. I don't know how deep the tang runs but I sure didn't have any trouble with it. I have a Lapland on the exchange.

I have the Harding, and it's sharp as a laser and pretty to look at (except for the poor tang-to-bolster fit).

I'm not really sure if I'd spend the dough on another one or not....

Stay sharp,

They come up every so often in the Trade Exchange.
