I have spent the better part of the day making a new webpage that describes, in detail, how to finish a full-tang kit knife. I am to the point just after clamping up the glued scales. I would appreciate it if you take a peek and tell me what you think...just click the URL in my signature, then in the frame at the left you will see a link for "Kit Knife Tutorial" about halfway down. Click here and you'll be at the page. Lemme know! If you think something should be added/subtracted/changed, please post.

Hello Chiro!

Let me be the first to say, it's a GREAT tutorial! Very direct to the point, and great timing too.

The reason I said great timing, is because I recently got a kit knife from Brian (Caffrey) and was wondering how to get this started, specially on the handle issue. Brian ICQ'd me today, and gave me the URL to your site tutorial. I read and assimilated it, and could only say that it was made for beginners like me, very simple and direct to the point.

Thanks for putting up the tutorial.

And Brian, if you're reading this, thanks too, for giving me that great link!

Great site, Chiro! As a budding/struggling knife kit person, I enjoyed reading your tips and ideas. Drill presses do help a lot. I just need to get more practice finishing the handles. I put together the razor edge bootknife from Jantz and it has square handles that are shaped to the tang, but I didn't round them out cuz I had to go back to school. I'll finish it over break and do a steak knife and the renaisance dagger. I'll put some pics up if I can get a hold of a scanner.

Guys, I spent this morning finishing it up, so now I discuss ad naseum the finishing of the handles, too. I also put up photos of some projects, all of which were done exactly the same way (if not more crudely) than the way I do things now and have described for you. I will hopefully have photos soon of my most recent projects. These would include a tiny, thin tanto with carbon fiber handles and mosaic pin, and some other tantos with black paper Micarta bolsters and cocobolo handles, koa/cocobolo scales and bolsters, koa scales, green linen Micarta with traditional black Japanese cord wrap, and more. I am also going to be experimenting with silver wire inlay, so keep your fingers crossed!
