What do you think of the black oxidized swisstool/swisstool spirit?

Just wondering about the black oxidized finish on these. If you have one, do you like it? How does it look "in person"? Do you think the finish will hold up and wear well, or does it scratch easily and start to look ....... Worse? ....... Better? Any advantages/disadvantages to this finish over the regular polished finish?

Even if you don't have one, your opinions would be welcome! Thanks!

Although the advantage of a black oxidized Spirit might be apparent to some, it escapes me completely. Apart from military or clandestine purposes (burglary?), it doesn't seem useful except to help make the multitool more difficult to find if lost in darkness or dirt. If appearances are all that important, surely a black coating that eventually shows scuffs and scratches would work against that. And to pay extra for all that goodness? :confused: I'd rather spend the difference on coffee (black.) ;)

I recently purchased a black Spirit b/c I couldn't find that same model in plain stainless (the one with both blades). The black finish didn't feel totally dry and I was able to wipe some of it off but not down to the bare metal. On the positive side, it's not as slippery as the bare stainless. I'm sure it will get ugly quick but I could care less.

ahhh, black-ox coating....had that on an original pst.
advantages?
GREAT! it works as an added protective coating.
and also cuts glare when working under bright lights or the midday sun :-)
disadvantages?
i'm sure i left it here somewhere...
also pretty awful once the coating's half worn;
and the next post would probably be;
help needed - "any ideas HOW CAN I CLEAN THIS UP so that it looks presentable???"
this manner of coating almost always turns out to be a short term measure.
if you're into supplying a tender of sorts,
it's definately a great way for creating a never ending wave of black-ox specified procurements...

I wanted "shiny" but I found a Black Spirit really cheap a couple xmas's ago (deal I couldn't refuse!)

yes it does cut down on glare and it is another level of protection from corrosion. Yes some of it does come off in time/use (like around the rivets/heads) but it actually looks cool! like personality. it's no big deal.

Thanks for the replies, guys! The Spirit S (two blades, no scissors) is what I'm looking for, but most well known and trusted sources list them as "out of stock" or on backorder ..... that is, the polished stainless ones. Can get a b/o fairly reasonably priced from a trusted source. I'd prefer a polished one, but I vacillate between "It's just a tool - who gives a crap what it looks like as long as it does the job", and "Ya, but it's my tool and my money and I really, really - about 10 to 1 - prefer the stainless over the b/o". :rolleyes:

Could anyone post their black oxidized swisstool spirit that has been used a lot? I'm really curious how it looks when it's worn. It's the only thing keeping me from getting one. Thanks.

Personally , I would love to have a B.O. Spirit S . It would grow old gracefully !

I've had it for about 3 years now ;)

I'm not sure about the "wearing off" of the coating - I have a really vintage black Gerber Multiplier "600" series with the detinator crimping notch. - I've owned and used it for over 20 years -camping and fishing and general carry - I've gone through three of those black "balistic cloth" pouches for it -but the tool itself still looks great (except where sharpening the blade scuffed up the black) - Lots of luck on finding another cause mine "ain't for sale"!
Peace

Me personally I don't see many advantages to the BO. They do look great when their new and it may help with corrosion but I prefer the normal stainless for visibility and not showing scratches as much...That being said it's not a deal breaker if it's BO, just a preference.
