What do you think of these patterns?

I'm looking for a fixed blade for hunting & camping, with a 3.5" - 4.5" blade. I'm considering two basic patterns.

(Click pics to go to the manufacturer's page.)

The first pattern is exemplified by the Cold Steel Master Hunter and the Fallkniven F1:

The second pattern is exemplified by the Swamp Rat Howling Rat and the Ontario RAT-3:

What do y'all think of these patterns in general? And these knives in particular?

Any other knives I should look at for this kind of task?

I think the two bottom ones are better because they have a place for your index finer beyond the guard , so that you can choke the blade if you need to.

I am no expert though
:)

You may definitely want to look into Bark River Knife and Tool who also make great knives and seem to be what your looking for. Out of those listed I like the Fallkniven F1 and the Howling rat the most and would be the only two I wuld spend my money on.

I am no expert either but I have never seen a Cold Steel knife that wasn't razor sharp. I have also heard good things about the Falkkniven. Regarding the Rat-3, i wonder if the blade would be ground thin enough for your purposes. As for the Swamp Rat, I have no comment.

I would talk a look at Bob Doziers knives as well. He is a master. WWW.DozierKnives.com.

What about SOG field pup? Quite cheap so you don't need to hesitate to beat him :)
It isn't so tough like swamp rat (carbon steel) or laminated fallkniven but if you don't intend to use it for batoning or prying it could be fine.

Four of my favorites. I have the F1 and the HR and right now the F1 is the my most handled. The other two are soon to be in my collection. Best bang is probably the Master Hunter. Toughest the HR with the F1 a close second and the RAT3 would probably hold it's edge the best and slice better than the others due to thinner D2 blade stock (1/8" I believe). Great taste in knives my friend ;-).

Here is the Bark River Huntsman that I use. However it is really too sharp for a new user with the convex ground tool steel blade.
