Made this from Ash by hand, the grain was near perfect(about 15" long)..What do you guys think of the shape?

Overall I like it, just looks a little weird with th shoulder so far down.

Just needs a Louisville Slugger stamp burned in now!

Love straight handles. I might have gone a tad smaller on the end swell, but it's probably safer the way you have it. Looks like the shoulder area is longer than usual too. It looks good, but how does it feel when you choke up on it? Overall a really nice job, I wish i could do that kind of work.

The shape looks great and if it ever comes loose you got plenty of shoulder to re-hang it on. How was the ash to work with? Was it a green billet or did you use dry lumber.

Looks great. I like the shape, and the grain is beautiful. How do you plan to finish it? Some stain or oil would bring the grain out nicely.

Shape looks like it would be comfortable and sturdy for sure. I held a link handle (no head, just in a store) with a large swell like that, felt intriguing.

Slight derail, when you make hatchets like this, do you sometimes/always/never temper the back for hammering? I think that would be my ideal little tool - hatchet sized and shaped (more wedge all the way to handle rather than bulging at the handle like a hawk) with hammer poll on backside. Even a big hammer poll like the one pictured.

I really like the straight haft with the swell at the bottom. nice work.
How much does that head weigh?

Thanks all, the imput is appreciated..**To answer your question, in fact most of the time we do..This particular hatchet has a heat treated poll..Its heat treated like a regular hammer face..

Yes, it would look better if the shoulder were no more than about 1/2" to 5/8" below the head. But that's a small thing. It looks great. I actually prefer a nice swell like that.

An artist sees the shape.....Wolf Creek does it again. A great great handle shape !
