What do you think of this idea?

I've carried a Vic Ranger in my left pocket for 2 years. Love it. In the right pocket is my knife of the day. That could be anything from a sodbuster to a stockman.

I am considering a move to a more multi-tool based EDC. Here's my thought: Vic Champion Plus and a Leatherman Charge TTi with an S30V.

pics from the web.

This way, I get my super steel knife and some really nice tools.

I know it would be a heavy set up, but I carry a load of crud as it is. It wouldn't bug me.

Pluses and minuses to this EDC pair?

If you don't mind the weight, I think it is a good setup. You will be very well prepared.

Thats a pretty powerfull set up . You might want to also have a look at the Cybertool family , that covers the small end of the driver spectrum rather well .

Chris

That's a good plan and I have done it, what I found even better was the VIC "Champion Plus" teamed with the LM "Skeletool CX". You still get the 154CM for your super steel needs. To be even lighter, maybe the Skeletool CX with a VIC "Huntsman Plus"...;) Just a thought...:)

Just as an afterthought, wouldn't it be outstanding if in the future "Victorinox" would offer a premium steel upgrade in several of the models they offer. Maybe just the large blade with say, S30V or 154CM or even ATS-34. I would for sure own those knives in a heartbeat!!!:D:thumbup::thumbup:

;)

I like ATS34, but it tends to rust a bit, so for a vic or multitool, I'd rather have something more corrosion resistant. Besides, SAKs are affordable
tools, lets keep it that way.

Well, I know that I'd buy one or two. Especially if they made the main blade a wee bit thicker.

By the way, yes, you are the guy that I got the idea from. It just intrigues me to be able to have so many tools at hand's length...and S30V at that. Weight doesn't bother me.

I can't really get into the Skeletool thing. To me, it looks hokey and lacks the versatility that would make it worth it to carry around.

I just don't see the overlap. If you're going to carry a big multitool, what does the SAK give you? If you do need the SAK tools, a Skeletool is a nice addition: a beater knife blade, the drivers, and pliers. I find my Skeletool is a winner. Some days last summer, that was all the knife I carried -- backed up with my ever-present Vic. Classic.

For me anyhow it's very true I'm carrying duplicate tools. I enjoy them both and I wont be found without pliers and I like the farmer as I can use that around the office without turning any heads.

Don't give up on the Skeletool. It's the real deal. The pliers are great and the screwdriver is a life saver at times. The blade is a cutter as I happen to like combo edges on the job. If you want, I would be willing to send you mine so you can give it trial run before you make a solid decision... Let me know and we can work it out??? :D

I typically carry a Charge TTi, a SAK and a dedicated blade. The blade tends to be an Izula while the SAK is almost exclusively a Compact (http://sakselector.info/cgi-bin/sak_selector.cgi?model=compact&buy=1&metric=1&pictures=1). The compact gives me all the other little amenities that I'd like to have (tweezers, pen, needle, a more workable pair of scissors and a more sheeple friendly blade). I have larger SAK but I just find they don't really just give a ton of overlap / tools I don't ever envision myself needing while giving me the added girth.

But I am a fan of pairing a full sized pliers based tool with a SAK to complement it, just a matter of finding what works the best for you and your needs.

Hey, Kevin, thanks for the offer. For now, I'll take a rain check.

You're right in that there's a lot of overlap. What I really want is a Leatherman Charge that also has tweezers and a toothpick. Ha ha. I use those buggers all the time. Maybe I could Superglue a Vic Classic to the handle and be done with it.

Well I can't blame you on wanting a "Charge Ti" One of the coolest multitools I own. You can still have the best of both worlds. Get your "Charge" and carry a Vic "Classic SD" and you'll have your tweezers & toothpick as well. Win win!!! :D

If all you really want are the toothpick and tweezers, have you considered just tossing a Classic in your pocket, on your keychain or in the side sleeves of the sheath if you belt carry?

Duh! Or should I say D'Oh! The key chain idea is perfect!

Well, you just gave me some work to do. Gotta compare a Charge TTi to my Ranger and see what I'd be giving up to gain the pliers and S30V blade.

Large blade >> would become S30V, which is a huge plus
Small blade > don't really need it, but would be on key chain
Can opener with small screwdriver >> got it, got it
Bottle opener with large screwdriver & wire stripper >> got it, got it, got it
Scissors >> got it
Wood Saw >> got it
Metal saw with metal file & nail file >> not sure about metal saw, got it
Reamer with sewing eye >> doesn't have this, but I don't use it.
Corkscrew >> doesn't have it, but I don't use it.
Hook >> doesn't have it, but I don't use it
Wood chisel >> doesn't have it, but I don't use it
Fine screwdriver >> doesn't really have one this small, but I have these at home
Toothpick >> classic on key chain
Tweezers >> would be on key chain
Key ring >> on Classic
Life time warranty >> might as well be at 25 years.

And the Charge adds a diamond file, all blades lock, more bit choices, an 8" ruler, pliers, wire cutter, crimper/stripper.

Cost in weight is the Charge weighs about 90 grams more which is a few ounces.

Looking at this, I'd almost be dumb not to go Charge TTi + Vic Classic. Any other input?

Except for substituting a Rambler instead of the Classic, that's my standard EDC. Obviously, you are a person with wisdom beyond your years.

I honestly think the Victorinox Explorer Plus and Leatherman Charge TTi would be a perfect match! You get a long shaped philips driver, a magnifying glass, better scissors, a blade for food prep, a sheeple friendly blade, an awl, a carrying hook, a corkscrew, a pen, a toothpick, tweezers, and so on. The Champion is way too bulky and redundant, IMO of course. :)

Here are some examples of the kinds of combos I like to carry:

Victorinox Standard SwissTool and a Victorinox Climber

Victorinox Standard Spirit and a Benchmade 940

Leatherman Wave and a Victorinox Electrician

Skeletool CX and an Executive

Victorinox SwissChamp Plus and a Freestyle

Leatherman Pulse and a Victorinox Farmer (PERFECT!!!)

Leatherman Skeletool CX and a Victorinox Midnite MiniChamp II

Leatherman Charge XTi and a Leatherman Micra
