15” Bowie Knife with Damascus blade. Its an auction item. That is the only description. Yeah, I know, its not much to go on. I'm doing a favor for a friend, and this is all the info he has on it. He wanted to see roughly what he should pay.

It sure looks a lot like the Damascus knives I see a Pakistani gentleman selling at gun shows around here. Neat to look at, but pretty poor workmanship and absolutely no way of telling the quality of the steel.

He shouldn't. Not enough known about it. Sorry for the blunt answer, but I wouldn't buy blind like that.

honestly tell your friend not to get caught up in the fact that its a damascus knife. There are a lot and I mean A LOT of pakistan damascus out there that has nearly no ability to be hardened. Damascus done right can be amazing. Done wrong its less than worthless. The knife in the picture does look attractive but if it was a knife worth its salt in any sense there would be more information about it. Having a knife that looks like that with no history or backstory is a huge red flag.

Umm...if that is ivory, it would be banned from sale in Canada, I believe. IF it is not illegal, and IS ivory, depending on the quality, it could be worth several thousand dollars to the right buyer....an ivory bead braclet will go for $3-4K at auction...the steel itself is immaterial.

It's tricky to say from one picture but all of those little black holes in the handle are much more typical of bone than ivory. Make sure he sees Schreger lines when he looks at the butt of the scales.

+1 on what everyone else said. Sorry, It looks cool in the photo but a custom damascus blade like that stamped and by a known maker would be a lot of money. look up some custom damascus and ivory bowies for an idea. It will be in the thousands for the best materials and makers... well known makers anyway
edit - should have checked the original time, sorry.

Yeah, thanks for all the replys, Knifers. It sounds like he has done enough research and thinking to come up with the same conclusions. If he cant see a makers stamp,or see anymore info on it he does not want it.

Looking at the rest of the stuff in the auction Im not sure what to think of it now. I wish I could see the mosaic pin and see both sides of the knife. With a damascus blade the makers mark may very well be camouflaged. It could be a great score or a pakistan disaster. A poorly done mosaic pin would be a sure tell of garbage. Its hard to really tell with the single picture and limited information.
