This is my first time attempting to post a picture to BF, I hope it works. I have been a basic member for a while here, but just upgraded to knifemaker status. BF taught me everything I know about knifemaking. Here is my newest design. I am not sure what to think about it. I don't know if I like it or not, so please tell me what you think. Also I drew this design on paper and then changed the original drawing several times before I finished this knife, but when I finished it I thought it looked oddly familiar. If anybody knows of a similar design being made please let me know because I don't want to rip anyone off. Please any constructive criticism you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Kile, looks good! The dropped handle is a nice touch, and overall I'd say it flows nicely. I don't think your ripping anyone off, but it is sort of Lightfootish in profile. Well executed and original.

I am sure that there are some similarities to other knives. The just about has to be, but I didn't immediately think of any other knife when I looked at this one, so I sure don't see any problem.

This is the kind of knife I would have to see in person and hold before I could really tell how much I liked it. It's not one that makes my jaw drop, but overall I think it is pretty nice.

I forgot to list the specs on this knife

6 3/4" oal
3 1/8" tip to front of scales
2 5/8" cutting edge
3 3/4" handle
balance point is right at finger groove
steal is 0-1 mirror polished on bevels, blue(fine) scotchbrite finish on flats
hollow ground on 12" wheel
handle is black linen micarta hand sanded to 600 grit then buffed
full tapered tang
It is very light
Hey everyone please tell me what you think!!!!

Thanks for the replys guys.

I also kind of thought of Lightfoot after it was done, but I couldn't find a particular model just like it. The other maker that this blade reminded me of was Tom Anderson. A lot of his folders have dropped handles with similar profiles. I have a lot of respect for Greg Lightfoot, but I have never been a big fan of his designs.

This is just a prototype of this design I made up quickly to see if I liked the way it felt. I can't even make up my mind with the knife in my hand. Some times I pick it up and love it, some times I think it just doesn't feel quite right. I think it has to do with the big drop in the handle. I think I will have to carry it around for a while and see if it grows on me or not.

I like the design, and the execution looks very good as well. The handle looks like it would fit my hand well, and you can't go wrong with a simple drop point. I would have to see it in person to know whether I would ever want to buy it. Just my opinion, but it would look a bit better to me with the butt of the handle a little rounder, it seems to taper off a bit abruptly. And, FWIW, I don't consider it to be a rip-off of anyone. It's a simple design so there are certainly similarities to other works, but not a blatant rip-off. How long have you been making knives? Once I get out of the Army or when I get my own place, whichever comes first, I'd like to try my hand at it as well. Good luck with your knives, and be sure to post more pictures of your future work. Pics of pretty knives make the net so much more enjoyable.

very nice! I am working on my first knife and if it looks 10% as good as that one, I will be happy! Paul

Kyle, with the information that is available today it is hard not to unintentionaly duplicate a design. All designs are partially part of someone elses work. Im glad you are concerned:)
Your knife looks good...it has a nice flow, looks soft to touch which is necessary for a confortable tool. You have accomplished alot ...keep up the good work.

The knife looks good.If there is a line or a grind on a knife
that looks anywere near somones else, you get slammed for it.
When a person sets down to design a knife you can not help what you draw it just comes out and there is nothing you can do about it.
I am looking at the knife and not to see if it has a line like someone or a finger grove like somone.like it has been said there is nothing out there that has not already been done.
I post some knives about 2 weeks ago and got slammed because
my knives had a feel to them like another big time maker.
somtimes I think when a new maker comes in and shows some talent
some say that we have not payed there dues. This is one thing
that has bothered me about being a new maker.I have not ground a knife sence I have post the knives I have shown.Makes it tough for a newbie to feel good about what they did and you feel as thogh you have to explain yourself to everyone out there that sees maybe some influnance from another maker.Keep on doing what you are doing the knife look good

:grumpy:

Nice knife you got there Kyle.
I think I'll start using my 10" wheel. I like the grind you got with the 12" wheel.

Thanks for all the replys guys.
Nathan, I saw you post and I was scared something like that would happen to me. Like I said when this knife was finished it just looked very familiar to me, but I suppose after planning it and drawing it, and working with it for a few days, it should look familiar. By the way I liked the look of your knives. I should mention I have a hunter design that looks similar to Neil Blackwoods small hunter, I drew it from scratch, and I basically tried to make a more streamlined, more "tactical" version of an Ed Fowler style knife. Compare the two and you will see what I mean. I decided if anybody had a problem with it tough, it was my design, it probably isn't as close to Neil's knife as I think if I compared them in person, and my style is not nearly as refined as Neil's. There are a lot of knife patterns out there that are very similar, because there aren't that many practical blade and handle shapes out there.

Roadrunner, I have been making knives for about 2 years, but have only had decent equipment, for the last 8 months or so. I probably get to spend about 8 hours a week working on knives.

Oldgrinder,
I love hollow grinding with a bigger wheel. I started with an 8" wheel, moved to a 10" wheel, and now I almost always use the 12" wheel. I like taking the grind higher up on the knife. It really gives the knife nice cutting geometry with the bigger wheel hollow grinds. I got the idea from a post by Darrel Ralph about how he prefered a 14" wheel. Ohterwise I would still be using my 8" wheel. I think when I can afford it I will probably get a 14" wheel next.
