What do you use a mill for in knife making?

Guards, bolsters, integral knives can be milled instead of forged. You can also do a variety of handle work with a mill that is virtually impossible any other way.

ofcourse all this can be done by hand and should be done by hand when your just starting out and learning--thanks-marekz

I use mine for making the nail nick on my folder blades and for milling some clearance in the liners so the tang doesn't get all scratched up.

Hell yeah man. You must have a pretty decent setup to take such a slow deep cut without any chatter. I doubt my old Bridgeport could do that.

I've always said a mill is one way to rough out bevels and get things straight and even before grinding. I start my grinding at 120 and am finished at 400 in 15 minutes after milling first.

I did a WIP thread a while back about how I use a mill in knifemaking. I'm not suggesting this is the way for everybody, but it floats my boat:
