I have both the swiss champ and the mechanic with their small set of pliers and I have used both on several occasions to help with smaller tasks. What do all you guys use your small swiss army pliers for? Are they used as pliers or just beefy tweezers?

They are very useful to me.

Tighten cable ties.

Tighten knots when making lanyards.

Loosen wing nuts.

Bend wire.

The Mechanic is the smallest (slimmest) SAK with a set of pliers? Mechanic Jr. seems to be a bear to track down.

Frankly, I usually just use mine to move objects to the garbage when I'm not willing to touch them myself. What can I say? I work in retail.

I've got a Champ and I don't think I've ever used the pliers.

They are more useful than you might think. Once I assembled frames and mounted prints for a photography exhibit using the pliers and screwdriver on my Swisschamp. That was because the proper tools I had been assured were on site were not. At first I regretted not having my Leatherman with me that day, but the 'champ turned out to be up to the task, no problem. Over years I got a fair amount of use out of its pliers when the SAK was my only multi-tool, although since then I transitioned to pliers-based Leathermen. That's no knock on SAK pliers, but they have obvious limitations. What works depends on what you do in life.

They're also handy for grabbing small objects or objects in places where you can't get your fingers.

I was filling my gas tank one day at the local Sam's Club and a lady over on the other side of the pump couldn't get her card out of the reader. I tried to get hold of it with my fingers and pull but it wouldn't budge. Well, I keep my Mechanic in the change tray of my car, so I got it out and used the pliers to get hold of the card and pull it out.
