just looking for some reccomendations of what you keep on your carbon steel pieces for rust prevention.

I wipe the blades down occasionally and have no problems. I also store my knives in a safe with a dehumidifier.

I use car wax after completely removing the rust, but obviously thats not good if you use the knife for food prep, which I typically don't.

I always have a SAK on me for food cutting - I keep that blade clean.

Car wax (meguire's cleaner wax) or mineral oil, depending on the knife and its use.

If you don't plan on using the knife for a while, such as storage, I've heard some people using clear nail polish. If you do use it, a little wipe down with mineral is more than enough.

I use Rennaissance wax for blades that are going to be stored for a while, and mineral oil for those that see frecuent use.

Break Free CLP.

Beat me to it.

My son had a cheap flea Market sword that kept getting covered in rust just setting in his room. I would take it, clean it up and put some WD-40 on it and give it back and it would be covered in rust with in a week. The last time I cleaned the rust off, I wrapped it in paper towels, soaked it down with, Break-Free, and thin wrapped in plastic wrap. I let it set like there like that for a few days and then unwrapped it. By this time he forgot about the sword and I just let it set in the corner of the garage. That was a year ago and it is still rust free.

Break-Free is good stuff.

never thought of waxes, ill look into them.

Just make sure you get the blade completely clean. You don't want to put a coat of car wax or museum wax on a dirty blade because you'll just trap the contaminates against the metal.

Main rust prevention measure: Keep the blade clean & dry.

Secondary measure: Mineral oil - does the job and allows the knife to be used on food if needed.

In my experience nothing else is needed.
