What Do You Use Your Knife For?

What are your main uses for your knife? Maybe if I see what people use them for I can get some ideas on what to offer.

My main day to day uses are utility type tasks...minor food prep, opening packages, cutting up cardboard, etc. For the day to day, I like a small fixed blade (3" or less) and/or larger folder. If I am going on a day hike, I will take a fixed blade somewhere in the 4" range. Camping would be a fixed blade in the 5" + class.

Making cardboard boxes fit in the recycling container, food prep, opening packages/mail, juggling, landscape duties, garage duties (cutting hoses, belts, etc...), and just to play with sometimes. Those are the main uses.

I'm right there with the rest. I use my knife for food prep as it's an area I can get some actual use out of my knife so I tend to use it even when a kitchen knife may be handy. Otherwise cutting boxes is a big one, along with cutting of string/rope/rubber/hose. Eventually I would like to get a knife for carving but that hobby will probably not be starting all that soon.

pretty much nailed it with this answer.

Same here. Along with occasional fingernail cleaning/trimming, fishing line cutting, or cutting gift wrap around the holidays.

I know everyone hates hearing this: I mainly use my knives with dinner. I know the plates destroy edges and yadda yadda yadda. Fact of the matter is, I don't fish, I don't hunt, and although I'd love to go camping, it's just not in the cards at this point on my life. My knives get used in the kitchen, at the dinner table, and occasionally to break down boxes. I've carried my Bluegill and another small fixed blade out to the store before, but it just seemed so unnecessary. I'm a small knife guy- a Case Peanut handles 99% of my knife needs. A sheath is bulky, even for a small fixed blade, and I can't ever get it out of my mind that something unnecessarily huge is in my pocket. I'd love to get a set of 4 or 8 of those Stretched Workers in something like 1/16" CPM154 or S35VN with Desert Ironwood handles to be my dedicated fancy steak knives, but I simply don't have the funds for such an endeavor.

Your knives are fantastic, John, and I wish I could order a dozen more. It saddens me to read that your orders aren't coming in at a steady rate. You really are a hidden gem on this site; a gem I wish more of the ~80,000 BF members would take notice of.

My fixed blades are primarily used for kitchen duty - and those are the ones that get used the most.
If I were more "outdoorsey", I would be making hot-dog sticks and making kindling for fires.

In reality, I spend more time opening and breaking down boxes, cutting string, twist-ties and clamshell packages, and for that I typically use a folder.

HOWEVER - I do like to fancy myself some "twig mangling" as a hobby/pastime, and for that I use either my XD/M or, of course, the beautiful Twig Mangler!

Like most others, a vast majority of my knife usage is in the kitchen and random daily tasks. The obvious exception being during deer season when my knives get quite a bit of use.

I often carry a mix of knives (small folder or two with a small fixed blade).

Right now I carry a GEC 14 in Ebony, a 3" fixed blade, and a Victorinox Secretary (in the wallet as back up).

My fixed blade sees the most use, from strings, fire prep now that the summer is here, general yard utility (dirty work, garden, et al).

Folder (GEC 14) sees fruit, foods, lighter duty
Victorinox stays in the wallet in case I ever forget a knife.

I like an ergonomic handle shape with a Semi-Wharncliffe or straight back design.

Knife handles with a straight back to it are comfortable in a hammer grip when applying a lot of pressure, but don't feel just right in a saber, modified saber or pinch grip. This is where something with a handle shape like a Zero Tolerance 0770 fits Great. Nice palm swell and ergonomics due to the rounded and sloping spine.
