What Do You Use Your Knives For?

Just curious what you use your knives for, and your choice of knives. Hunting, fishing, camping, bushcrafting, self defense? Pictures are always appreciated.

Mainly bushcraft, camping but I do use them for hunting as well, I carry a firearm so I really don't see them as a weapon but if worse came to worse I'd use it for that

I wish I could say that I build log cabins or eliminate enemy patrols with my trusty blade but here's my real, most common uses:

1) Cutting my morning bagel (I buy a sleeve or two from the bakery and keep them in the freezer at work, have one every morning)
2) Cutting up fruit and cheese (pretty much a daily as well)
3) Opening boxes and packaging, cutting threads, garden duties (trimming, pruning, harvesting, etc)

Outside of the day to day, I always have a blade or several when I do get a chance to go out and play in the woods, hunt, fish, camp, etc...

Putting this both places:

I group my knives into 3 rough categories:

EDC (Spyderco Folders, JK/KY Pocket King, various Fiddleback Forge, Turley Sni-a-bar):
I use a mix of fixed blades and folders which due to local laws need a blade < 3.5". I always have at least one of these on me every day. They deal with apples, mail, boxes, whatever else I feel like cutting up.

Kitchen (JK Galley Wag, Fiddleback Forge Hunter, and a bunch of cutco):
These knives stay in the kitchen full time. Thin high grinds that slice well.

Bushcrafting/Camping (Fiddleback Forge, Turley, Tackett)
We like going camping as a family, and I like sneaking away to the mountains to play whenever I can. Or even just messing around in the backyard. Processing firewood, camp knife, carving, etc. I beat on these knives, batoning, chopping, driving the point...

I think Thurin has it covered for me, although my EDC's are often meant to be able to take over the bushcraft roll in a pinch and since me and both my kids are major apple munchers a lot of peeling that goes on a daily basis.

Also prying apart legos, random thought but it's one of those jobs that come sup so often I can't help but notice very little in my pockets works as well at separating the beggars :)

Self defense? not so far, may it continue,

Minimally I have a traditional slipjoint which is used for fruit, cutting whatever needs to be cut, etc. Small or medium fixed blades (JK Kentucky Fieldmate, JK Hiker or BRK Canadian Special) for hiking chores which include splitting small kindling for a quickie fire, cutting the dog loose from vines or small branches during hikes (this has only happened a couple times, but I was glad for a capable knife), and the like. In lieu of camping, we make a fire almost daily, in the chiminea (sp?), and the knives are used for that a lot.

It comes down to the simple fact that most of us never go anywhere without a knife or two or more--it's a way of life!

I use my knives mostly in the kitchen, that is to say I use my JK fixed blades in that role for the most part.

When camping, I use my JK's for food and fire prep.

I use my VIC Waiter almost every day for cutting up my apple and some cheese for lunch.

I use my modern one-hand opening clip-knife for opening packages and letters, clam-packs and whatever else comes up during my routine.

I use my JK knives primarily for camping, with a bit of domestic/household use. For cooking I use all Japanese knives, pretty specialized (very hard steel and very, very thin blades) but I'm a professional chef so my preferences aren't those of the average home cook. EDC is handled by a little Spyderco Ladybug since I always need to have a blade on me but I can't tolerate having a bunch of crap in my pockets. Even an Ewok would be too big for EDC in town for me.

Toby's Knife & Improved Bowie in the kitchen, the Tool & Hiker for camp work & the Chop Muk for it's name sake..chopping.
