What does 15" really mean??

New to this part of the forum and new to Khukuris in general, I have a newbie question. I see many references to 15", 18", 20" and so on. Is this measurement referring to the overall length of the khukuri or the blade length?

Ichor it is the length of the whole knife measured in a straight line from the top of the tang to the point of the knife.
At least that's the way I do it.:)

I'm not a novice, when it comes to knives, but Khurkris are a type I, obviously, know nothing about. I tried several FAQ's but could not find this info (maybe I just missed it). Thanks again, especially Semper Fi, for that great maintenance link. "Welcome to the Cantina" great, I love it. Got any Dos Equis??

As I recall it is from the point at the tip of the blade to the center of the handle at the point where the steel tang is peened over the keeper atop the buttcap, measured in a straight line or by tape. The center of what the Hindus call "The Eye of God".

That's being picky, though.

Welcome to the Cantina, Ichor! Nice place to visit and learn. I call it HI U Himalayan Imports Univerity of Khukuri

I've only been a member since Jul or Aug. I know I ordered my first Khukuri the last part of Jul. We won't discuss how many I have now. :)

If you go to the Himalyan Imports shopping site, many subject sub categories are linked. FAQ is very thorough and updated periodicaly.

Lots of good folks on this forum. Sit back and enjoy.

Welcome to the Cantina. Every body starts out not knowing much about the khuks to start with. But, let an old man tell you. I sure wish I would have gotten myself into these knives one long time ago.
I don't think I have had any other knife in my hand that oz. for oz. can keep up with these beautiful tools. They are dangerous enough that the saftey thread should sure be followed close. Until you get used to these, take things a little slow. Wildmahn can tell you all about the care that must be taken with the khuks.

You will find this forum to have some of the best people that I have ever come in contact with. They will tell it like it is and, give anybody good advise and help each other on the forum as much as they can. This is sure the place of the good guys.

There is very seldom any friction here as you probably know already if you have lurked here very long. There is a lot of banter but, it is all in good fun.

Again, Welcome and enjoy.:) :D

Funny ... A lady recently asked me the same question.

Later I had to explain that I started measuring from the middle of my back.

Howard is the guy who ended up naming this place the "Cantina" after I mentioned the inhabitants of this place made me think of the bar scene in the first Star Wars movie. Still feels that way sometimes.

Ah Ha..:D

That's why I fit in here so well.:)

I was wondering..LOL

Welcome, Ichor. I'm new here too, but you will find these guys to be patient and understanding...and sometimes really funny. :D

Oh, and just a word of warning, Ichor; after you decide on your first Khuk, better have your money ready for the second...and third...and fourth. You see a patten here? I'm working on my third.

Wow, thank for the info, the links and the warm welcome. Ask a simple question and gain a bunch of friends (even if some of them are, alledgedly, a little off center). Tho' I think I would fit right into the bunch in the bar in Star Wars.

Special thanks to Howard for the more "personal" measuring method.

And Bill, since returning from Viet Nam, over 30 years ago, I make a special effort NOT to drink beer with XXX's on the label. ;-)

Naturally, I won't really feel like one of the pack until I get my own. Kinda like the looks of that 20" Sirupati . It appears that it would easily take the place of that short sword I've been eyeing. Is there any way to be assured of getting a horn handle? T

hanks again for the welcome to this fun bunch.

Yup, just ask.

Either that or pick one with a horn handle on one of the UBDOTD's ( Uncle Bill's Deal Of The Day ).

Get what you really want first.

It's only after the first one that you face a problem when you want one kind of handle and a deal comes up with $50 off the other kind ( suggestion - grab it anyway - you'll probably learn to love both kinds! ).
