What does a shiny edge indicate?

I noticed on my 710 that a portion of the blade edge is "shinier" than the rest, does that mean the edge is somehow damaged? I haven't even used it enough to dull it in any way, unless it actually did hit the spacer when I closed it before.

That shows damage, in the form of a burr, just give it a good sharpening and it'll go right away.

I wonder how it got that way... The only thing I can think of is that it actually slammed against the spacer when I flipped it shut (which I don't do anymore).

I don't have a sharpener yet, but plan on getting a Sharpmaker sometime soon.

Could have come with a burr from the factory. The Benchmades I have purchased usually come with so so edges.

I see. Well, I'll probably screw it up worse when I try to sharpen so I'll have to practice on my Gerber first.

Try slicing some paper with it. If it doesn't slice along that shiney part, then you know something is off. You could send it to Benchmade for a sharpening if you're afraid to try it yourself, and I don't blame you as properly sharpening a knife can take a good deal of practice. I'd recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's a good system for a begginer or a pro.
