What does a (+) sign next to a members name mean?

Sometimes some people will have a + at the end of their name when listed in the "active members viewing this thread" section or a few other places (in the box that lists members that have recently viewed a profile is another example). What does this mean? Originally I thought it had something to do with their status as a paid member but now I see members both brand new and non-supporting all the way up to senior members at high levels of supporting so that can't be it.
Just curious.
 
I think they are 'Friends' who are listed on your page.

That's what I see on my end.
