What does ATS stand for in ATS 34?

I'll take a guess: Asian Tool Steel

It stands for Alloy Tool Steel. It is made by Hitachi. The #34 is simply Hitachi's way of numbering their steels and it does not stand for anything.

That got me thinking about what some other steel names might mean. BG-42 probably means bearing grade.

Since ATS 34 only has 13.5% chrome in it, it just barely has enough to be considered stainless. Maybe it stands for almost tool steel

Mike's answer sounds better though.

CPM - crudiple particle metalurgy . CM - crudiple materials - company that mekes it??( I've let someone to tell me that same company that makes CPM steels makes it). Numbers are mystery to me...

Close- but I'm pretty sure the C in CPM is actually Crucible.
As far as I know the V stands for Vanadium. Its just another element added to the mix to make the steel stronger, more corrosian resistant, and hold an edge better.
