what does chiruwa mean?

hello

I am new to these forumns. I just purchased a chiruwa Ang Khola from HI after doing my research on kukri knives. I wasnt sure whether to get the 15 inch or the chiruwa. I bought the chiruwa because it seemed to be a little bit better quality and a heavier duty knife than the 15 inch ang khola.

what makes a chiruwa a "chiruwa"?

Also, on another note. I am very impressed with the extensive military background of many of the posters here (I have been reading many of the topics here trying to soak in as much info as I can)

Just a little background for myself to those that are curious:
-I am a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in 2000
-currently I am working towards getting my masters degree in business
-I kickbox and take jujitsu (just got my butt kicked today)
-after that... not much worth mentioning as im sure no one really

cares too much of the goings on of a new poster.

Really impressed with HI and im really impressed with this forumn.

good choice.

Good thinking to check the posting before submitting yourself to the various manners of rationalizing of Cantina members.

Be safe. You will love your khuk.

Stef, I hope you enjoy the forum like most of us do. I had a heck of a blank spot in my evenings the weekend that the forum moved and got the new servers.

I don't have one of those Blades but I have thought about one. So far my 18" WWII has done pretty much all I have needed one of the heavies for. It comes in at only 30 ozs.

Yea, stick around and you might get to like this place even more. Be carful of the HIKV though. It is pretty contagious. I don't think there are very many in the ranks of this forum that has avoided it. If there is I haven't heard about them.

Have a seat pull off the boots and enjoy the ride.:) :) :D

Stef:

Basically there are 3 major kinds of tangs for khukuris.

Full Tang with exposed tang all around and pinned scales. Apparently chiruwa means split, refering to the slab handles. Panna Butta also refers to the same type handle, but it's translation means rivetted through.

Full Tang with hidden tang. If you look at a buttcap and see a smaller ovoid or eye shaped keeper in the center acting as a washer inside of which the steel of a tang has been forced through the center and then mushroomed to "keep" it locked solid, you have the other full tang. Generally referred to as a rat-tail tang, it's really far thicker and sturdier.

This is preferred in Nepal as the tang is set in laha ( a local form of beeswax, tree sap, and other stuff which fills in the gap between the tang and handle. The horn or wood handle generally does not touch the tang except at bolster and buttcap, and the laha and handle absorb the shock of the blow rather than a direct transfer to the hand as in an exposed tang.

The last form of tang is a partial tang. It is like the enclosed tang but does not go thru to the end of the handle. Many village khukuris are made this way. when they get loose, they go back to the kami ( blacksmith ) who heats and adds a little more laha, and shoves it bck in.

On carved handle models mode by HI, the additional step of drilling and pinning a rod through the handle and tang assures such failures are unlikely. This permits carving all over the butt of the handle.

The pinned partial tang is rarely used except on artsy carved handles: Garud, Hanuman, etc.

The exposed Panna Butta or Chiruwa tangs are maybe a bit tougher than the other kind. Or maybe more likely to crack and chip than the other. Some say they transmit more vibration. Some say there's little difference. I suspect the one piece handles are longer lasting.
As far as horn, wood, and bone for handles, flip a coin.

well the thing that caught my eye about the chiruwa was "break it and we send you 2 for free"

im a very strong believer in "that which lasts longest, serves best."

it seems that the "preferred" tangs dont make much sense to me IF the do in fact have to be repaired more often.... but awe well there is much i dont understand...

im just excited that i dint get a CS kukri... and that i found this website... i was really going to get the CS one simply bcs i couldnt find any others that seemed as good. HI simply blows them out of the water.

I tried to break one of my first khukuries. All I got was tired.

Before finding this place, I got a couple or two CS kukris. They don't really compare for some reason.

Welcome aboard, Snarlin! Make yourself feel at home. This place is a bit like the Cheers Pub. :D :D

Has anybody tried cutting through 17 (or 7 or whatever) one inch manila ropes like in their video? Curious. I never had a need to cut through a bunch of ropes tied together. Has anyone else?

Semper Fi :Curious. I never had a need to cut through a bunch of ropes tied together. Has anyone else

Not since my pirate days in a previous life.:)

I hear that some street gangs have developed a manila rope armor. In some places it's 10 layers thick. ;)

Stef, this forum isn't like the net at large. WE don't hate new people. We like them. They may have something we've been waiting to hear.

btw; if Rusty ever sounds like too much of a know it all expert on these blades just remember when he was a child he pulled the legs off Grasshoppers.

munk

I will get you for that, munk. Just as soon as I figurre out a sufficiently embarrassing and memorable line.

PS: just for the record and this being a knife forum, I did NOT pull the legs off grasshoppers. I used the scalpel shaped blade of my trusty John Primble castrating knife to surgically amputate them. Unfortunately I used them all up during my experiments in casting spells/curses creating permanent impotence on people who failed to respect me.

Welcome, SS! My first HI khukuri was a Chiruwa AK. It caused me a serious problem as soon as I received it. To learn more about this problem, do a search for "HIKV" and be warned. :D

Stef,
You doing Small Circle JUJITSU?? Welcome to a long future of sprains, bruses,& lots of liniment!!Welcome & "DON'T"believe anything they say about me!!
THE SAINT!

im actually studying VEE JUJITSU... my sensai studied under a grandmaster and has been studying martial arts for over 15 years

I enjoy it bcs its a rough class... lots of tough xtreme athlete types are there and they put me thourgh the works.. I never went into the service after I graduated from Virginia Military Institute and i missed the discipline and warrior spirit from my life... and man its great... nothing gets me happier than learning to kill... and staying in shape at the same time... ;)

the same sensai also teaches me kickboxing... anyways heres the link if you are interested... i just started a little over a month ago so im a total newb to the martial arts thing... I never considered myself a martial arts fan before... but I am now :)

Just to clear a bit of our history up, I mentioned once that this place reminded me of the cantina/bar scene in the first Star Wars ( based on the denizens of this forum ). Trust me, it hasn't gotten less weird with age.

Grasshoppers, where did you go? Here grasshoppers, I know you're out there.

Now how's the formula go - Oh yes: eye of newt and toe of frog , particles of pollywog , Seared feathers from the duck, legs of grasshoppers with no luck... permanently limp

There, that ought to do it!

to the cantina. My first khuk was an 18" AK and it took about a year of hard use and intended abuse (i just hadta test these bad boys hard to see if they can really take it) and found I was unable to do more than minorly ding a soft part of the edge. Used it to cut metals, and I'm pretty sure I could make any car into an convertible (quickly and relatively safely if someone were trapped or something) with this thing.

Betcha cant buy just one! I certainly could not. HIKV, ya know.
