Ive heard flat ground and hollow ground used alot around here, can some please explain it to me. Also while ive got your attention, ive heard people call other people trolls, whats a troll mean in these forums?

The easiest way to describe flat ground is: When you look at the blade you will notice that the side of it is flat all the way from the spine down to where the start of the edge grind is.

If you have a look at other knives that are not flat ground you will notice that they look like somebody has held the side of the blade against a round grinding wheel and there is a hollow or dip in the blade.

Two good examples of the differences are the Spyderco Native and the Calypso.

A troll is somebody who logs on with the sole intention of causing trouble in the forum. They should be killed on sight. :)

Flat ground means that there are two intersecting flat planes, "flats," running from the back to the edge, which typically has a small final bevel less acute than the flat sides -- a "V" configuration.

A hollow grind is two interseting concave grinds, easily created by a grinding wheel.

A troll? A troll to me is someone who posts deliberately inflamatory comments or questions with the aim of producing disagreeable controversy. (Topic: "Does anyone agree with me that [very popular] Brand X is junk?")

No, I think Brand X is a great knife and that stupid thing you carry, Brand Y, is a piece of junk. ;) :)

(Sorry, couldn't resist.) :)

A Troll is a guy who posts on forums to deliberately make people upset.

Trolling is fun.

An example, I once went to an animal rights/PETA website, which was discussing medical experiments on cats.

I posted:

It is WRONG to do medical experiments on live cats. They should be first boiled to death.

Now I got some great e-mail responses from that one.

Trolling is however best used on people who are really full of themselves.

By the way, flat ground knives are generally very good slicers and cutters if the blade is not too thick.

Some big Bowies have flat grinds, and some of the old Cold Steel Trailmasters reflected a flat grind.

Actually, speaking as a dork who's been using the internet for the last 15 years, a troll is a person who posts in multiple threads on a forum even if they don't care about the topic or have anything interesting to add just to increase their post count. Kind of like fishing, when you go trolling you blast through as many holes as you can to catch as many fish as possible. threads=holes posts=fish. Troll might be used differently here than other places, but that's what I've always known it to be.

A Troll can also be the monster who lives under a bridge. Example, someone who hijacks a thread causing sh*t until you adknowledge him so the thread can move on, like the troll who makes you pay the toll to cross the bridge.

I believe that "troll" is a fishing term, and a trolling individual dangles his flame-bait for all to nibble at or ignore: "Sebenzas/Striders/Busses/Benchamade/etc. . .they totally Suck!"
