What does "Ink Stamped" mean on a blade?

I was wondering if this is exactly what it says -- just ink for the lettering on a blade. I want to know if that is the case, then if I get a knife like this would it be relatively easy for me to either buff the ink off, or use fine sand paper to remove it, since I far prefer a blade to have no lettering on it in some cases.

If you actually have the knife in your hands, it should be pretty easy to see what it'll take, if you examine the mark under magnification. If it's actually stamped or lasered into the steel, it'll be pretty deep (and obvious). You could also use the tip of a needle or toothpick to feel the mark, if it's very deep at all. If it's just ink, or maybe a light chemical etch, it'll be very shallow, maybe even flush on the surface. Sanding should remove it pretty easily, in that case.

Thanks. I don't have the knife yet, but wanted to see if there might be a chance of getting it to turn out how I want if I do get it. It is maybe around 25 years old I think.

Would this be a Buck knife, perhaps? I'm seeing a lot of those described as 'Ink Stamped', in reference to their older 'Pro-Line' series of knives. In that case, anyway, the 'Pro-Line' mark is pretty light on the blade. I'm betting it'd sand off pretty easily.

It occurred to me, looking at the large 'Pro-Line' mark on the Buck knives, it would be quite costly to do that very deeply, especially for a production knife.
