I wish to purchase a Old Timer trapper with 1095 steel. I am told that to make sure I get a 1095 carbon model, that I need to look for a package made pre 1997. Can someone kindly tell me what those packages look like? Bryan

Look for one with the word "WALDEN" in the tang stamp. If it comes in the little clear tube, make sure the pattern number on the end of the tube does NOT have a letter in front of it. If it comes in a box that is ALL brown except for lettering, whether hinged or just nesting, that would be good, even if the word "WALDEN" does not appear in the tang stamp. Additionally, look for one with traces of staining on the blades. If you see one with genuine bone handles instead of Delrin plastic handles, it will either be an extremely expensive genuine early knife from the 1950s, or it will be a late manufacture by Utica Cutlery or Bear and Sons. Don't go there. There are a lot of Schrade trappers for sale all the time. Feel free to run a URL by me (pm me) if you see one for sale that you interested in. Or just post it here with good pics; with experience, these are fairly easy to authenticate. By the way, the Schrade openstock trappers with 'jigged' Delrin handles are every bit as desirable as ones with the Old Timer branding.
