When I see the acronym CPM before a steel type such as S30V, what does CPM mean. is that an indication that the composition is made from a powered steel, or does it indicate that steel is made by Crucible? I googled it but still couldn't find the explaination I was looking for.

I guess I have the same questions about some of these new steels that Spyderco is using, CTS-XHP and
CTS-BD1. Does the CTS just mean that it is made by Carpender?

Are these steels any good?

Im pretty sure on this but if im wrong someone will correct me.

CPM is cruicable powder metelargy

cts is CarpenTer Steel

CTS-XHP is great, think improved, longer wearing, more corrosion resistant D2, good stuff.

BD-1 is meh, it's okay. It's a value steel with about .9% Carbon and 15.5% Chromium. It's very corrosion resistant, and will hold an edge fairly well, maybe a little less than 440C so it's not too bad at all, merely average I guess.

I thought it was Crunchy Puffy Marshmallows...

Nah, rockgolfer got it.

Lotsa good reading here:

http://www.crucible.com/products.aspx

I have always been a marshmallow cream kind of guy. Mmm, peanut butter and marshmallow cream sandwich. Delicious.

But anyways, Carpenter and Bohler(makers of ELMAX and M390, etc...) are on top of their game right now. Really giving Crucible a run for their money in knife steel.

one more question. is all S30V made by Crucible? if you have S30V that does not say CPM in front if it, such as on Bucks Vantage and Paradigm Pro models they dont have the CMP designation, I am assuming that is also Crucible Steel.

Yes. :)

Crucible, Latrobe Steel Distribution & Specialty Metals, and Carpenter are all in joint ventures now. That's why 20CV is now CPM-20CV.

Zapp, Erasteel, Bohler-Uddeholm, Sandvik, Aichi, Hitachi, Takefu, etc are all on their game, an it's a good time to be a knifeknut.
