What does the term scales mean?

Is it just in reference to fixed blades? Can it also pertain to slabs of handle material attached to the liners on folders that are constructed that way? Maybe I've been using it wrong...... :confused:

No, in fact it will be more often used with folders than with fixed blades, because many fixed blades have full handles, whereas most folders have scales.

Sorry, I was only thinking from a makers(yeah right)perspective and I have yet to do any folders, but that is quite right.
