What does this mean, "while I can?"

I've been considering getting a Busse Boss Jack Combat Grade for a while as seen on the home page. I guess the allure and all the good talk about Busse drew me in, but I don't need another knife, which is why I haven't gotten one yet.

But recently someone else asked for some advice picking out a Busse, and lots of people were saying "get a boss jack directly from them while you can." I'm new to Busse culture, so please bear with me here--what's with the "while you can?" Are they limited in production? How come there are so many other models being sold in the For Sale forum here but only two on their Web site?

thanks

Because Busse only does limited runs of the knife designs, and when its taken off the website thats usually it. After that if you want the same blade you will have to go to the secondary market where there is usually a slight price increase.

Thanks! I wish I could put in my order now but their merchant page is broken at the moment...

"While you can" is Busse's business model - they will release a new model and keep it for sale on their website for a period of time, like around 6 months or so, then they do not sell that model from their online store anymore. They may have them for sale at shows, but you cannot order them when they are off the website.

So the current release is the Boss Jack and when its gone, its gone. Thats why people can charge high premiums on the secondary market...

So... I would get a Boss Jack... while you can AT FACTORY DIRECT PRICING. I bet they will go for $350 on the secondary market once the official Busse offering is over.

EDIT: Oops, beat to the punch :D

Thanks for the quick lesson about Busse. This makes them come off to me as a sort of boutique, a really high-end knifemaker... both highly practical, great quality, yet a collectible. It does irk me a bit because I'll never know whether I should get this one QUICK GET THIS ONE NOW BEFORE IT'S GONE QUICK or wait because maybe, just maybe, the next model will be more to my liking.

It seems the blade shapes are roughly the same, though, and the most drastic changes are the lengths. The Boss Jacks are about 6", which is to my liking, so I'll QUICK GET THIS ONE NOW BEFORE IT'S GONE QUICK grab one.

Well, I got it. I decided to just phone it in. Black finish, black paper, choil.
... cue weeks of second guesses and remorse about whether I should've gotten double cut and red & black G-10 instead.

hahaha congrats!!! Hoenstly I've been through 20+ models of Busse and the BJ is really a hit - its just a great length, a nice height and not too thick. I love it and I know that when Amy sounds the "BJ will be down in a few days" alarm, I'll likely order another.

Good color choices too - black paper is really really comfortable and I always prefer the feel of micarta to G10. There is a reason Busse uses black paper a lot for their LEs like the BWM and CABS...

The good thing is, if you receive you BJ and really really hate the color combo, you can get your money back or more on the exchange.... Its very hard to lose money on a combat grade Busse purchase...

Well, youre up **** creek now though, because once you get to feel and use the BJ, you will be hooked. Start selling any scrap gold or children you have laying around because now you need a chopper - lucky for you the B10 should be out in the next year and aftermarket prices are the best they've been since I got hooked a few years ago :D

Well you sold me :) I'll try to limit myself to just this one. I didn't even know exchanges were an option. I assume I have to act before they stop production of the BJ.

Now to figure out how to pronounce "Busse..."

Now you begin to understand the horrible, irresistible, unquenchable thirst for Busse's and their metal Crack formula called INFI.

It makes no sense. I just can't stand it when new offerings come out, and I cannot buy them!!!!!!!!!!!

I have owned 12 Busse Knives. You really don't know what is coming next. It is always on the horizon, like a black cloud of financial ruin!

I have sold several models to try out new ones, only to love the new ones, but miss the old ones!

There are about 13 models at least that might come out sometime, and I don't "need" any of them. But I might not be able to get them later, or will be able to at a high mark up.

It is a brilliant, and I mean brilliant production model!

Take rats, (or hogs, or dogs) and put them in a cage. Give them a reasonable, reliable source of food every time they want it (push a button and food comes out). They don't show addictive behavior.

Take the same animal, make the supply uncertain (ie random release of the same food, with no predictability or rhyme or reason), and the animals begin showing compulsive, addictive behavior. Hitting that button again, and again, even if they have no "need" of the reward, and can't eat any more.

I am fighting ordering several knives, because I like the design, and know it will be available only at a mark up later, or not at all.

I don't need them. I already have to select which of my INFI I can take camping or hiking, or fishing. But I still want to order more!

It will be there sooner than you might expect.

Good choice, welcome to the addiction, now comes the waking dreams of hogdom.
