Really embarrassing question, I know. I searched the forum for "tip" and read each and every thread, but they always assumed that the reader knows what tip up/down means. A Google search yielded no relevance either.

So, what does a tip up and a tip down refer to?

it means is the blade tip point up or down when the knife is clipped to your pocket using the pocket clip.

Many have strong feelings one way or the other, some knives you can switch how the pocket clip is mounted.

Umm, I don't understand, how is it physically possible for the tip to point upwards without it falling out of, or into, your pocket?

You mean how does the blade not open up while in your pocket? Because there is a detent that holds it closed.

From True North knives, this is an example of tip up:

because the knife is closed. quality folders will have a detente which biases the blade toward the closed position, but does not hinder its opening significantly.

with enough force/inertia, the blade may open, but highly unlikely inside a pocket.

Ohh, I see. I thought tip up would mean that you attach the knife to your belt with the fastened part of the clip on the bottom.

Look at the closed knife in this picture. If it were clipped in your pocket the tip (of the blade) would be facing down...

Now look at this knife, in your pocket the tip would be facing up...

Ah, you're clipping the knife to your belt. No, no matter which way you attach it (tip up or tip down) you're still going to be clipping the knife to your belt from the top (fastened part of the clip on top), so it can't fall off. For a knife that lets you pick tip up or tip down, you actually unscrew the clip from the knife and flip the knife whichever way you want to carry it, then screw the clip back on.

misread your post, i thought you were referring to the blade.

as mentioned, it is just the positioning of the clip on the scale relative to the pivot.

on the same side as the pivot, it is oriented for tip down. opposite the pivot, it is oriented for tip up carry.
