I really need an EDC knife. I like benchmade, but i want something reliable...
sharp... What I mostly do is cut things taped together, breakdown boxes, various cutting tasks... good blade steel.

Look on the bay and pick up a NRG 2 or the Rat 1 folder. These are cheap but very well made folders, especially the NRG 2. Made in the USA to boot. keepem sharp

nothing wrong with or unreliable about Benchmade. How much are you looking to spend. I usually point people towards offerings by the following companies: Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw, Victorinox, Leatherman.

Greetings: I believe the NRG-2 steel is 13c26 . Its' a good steel. But, cardboard can be quite abrasive and will dull a blade faster than I once thought possible. A harder steel will probably stay sharper longer if you cut a lot of cardboard especially if the cardboard is dirty or gritty. You do however risk an edge chipping more easily if you hit a staple. Tape can also gum up a blade quickly and then make it hang up in whatever you are cutting. A very smooth and easily cleaned finish on a more abrasive resistant steel might be the way to go. Nothing wrong with Benchmades. I use a Benchmade 940 on boxes with tape and have had very good results. OldDude1

If you like Benchmade get one. A nice Griptilian with 154cm steel would serve you very well.

A little bit outta left field......

Leatherman charge tti

S30v plain edge

not sure what the serrated is, but not marked.

Will open boxes and stuff all day.

I know your chasin' a knife, but just an opinion.

Kershaw JYD II CB, ZT0350, Kershaw G10 Tyrade, S30V Leek, or a CB Leek.

I have used all of these to do the same tasks you posted. My personal favorite is the ZT0350.
S30V blade with Tungsten DLC coating and G10 scales.
I edc the ZT0350 and the JYD II CB everyday.
I have never had a problem with either.
I have only had to sharpen the JYD II CB twice with over a years worth of box and tape cutting.

Good luck in your search.

Get your hands on a Kershaw Needs Work and you'll be cutting boxes up left and right like there is no tomorrow.

Very easy to sharpen when the time comes down the road

I completely forgot about the Needs Work. The limited run with G10 handles is very comfortable. Also don't forget about the PackRat from Kershaw.

The more I look at the Packrat, the more I want one! That is one "sharp" looking knife.

I just got the Spyderco Persistence...its a good size to for EDC..doesn't weigh down ur pants..nice size blade..plus its a spyderco!

Take a look at a Lone Wolf T2. One of my favorite daily edc blades.....
Good luck with the search......:)

Stick with the Benchmade. Even their 440 and AUS8 holds it's edge better than Kershaw's 13c26. Not that Kershaw makes a bad knife, I just prefer the edge retention most Benchmade knives offer when I am at work.
