What elements are you tired of seeing on knife websites?

We all look at knifemaker's sites, and I'm sure there are aspects of them that you either like or dislike. I'm poking my feelers out here for a little feedback because I'll be building a website for myself in the near future and I'd like to eliminate things that annoy viewers before I even begin.

I'd love to hear what you all think.

Thanks,
Jim

First off is mismatched text color and background color. If you can't read it, or strains your eyes, it's not good.

Second is (and this is more the fault of programs then the maker) bad layout, overflowing animation, and general "broken" feeling about the site. This is more often then not caused by using something like MS Word and saying "Save as webpage."

Either take a short class, or ask someone to help you with it. Self designing is fun, but if you don't know what you're doing, you could end up with a frontpage powered junk site.

Hi Jim,

What Josh said about the design is 100% correct. Frankly, website templates are SO inexpensive and they have done all the hard designing for you. Just add your text and change menus as needed. Done. That's what I started with.

Most maker websites don't include a photo of themselves. I highly recommend you show your mug for a personal touch.

Best of luck!

Templates might work, but definitely start with free ones instead of buying it. You'll get a good feel for editing and making small changes. Then step up to changing colors, fonts, etc. If everything is CSS positioned (what isn't now) you can change everything and anything with a couple of changes to the CSS file. (http://www.csszengarden.com/ is an amazing example of what you can do with a little CSS change).

If you need any help, don't hesitate to email me. I do this for a (partial) living. ;)

....Gadgets & Gear? Around the Grinder?

My website is made based on a free template from the open web design site. I give credit where it's due at the bottom of each page, but heavily modify it for my own use. I'll admit until just very very recently the website has been exclusively for my personal use and the use of my friends , both online and in real life. Just recently I've got around to getting business cards made, and now i need to actually put the work into making my website professional and more usable, rather than how it is right now.

Coops advice is right on. I built my site using templates and I think it came out pretty good for someone with little to no computer training. As to what I don't like...I don't like to have to hit on an ENTER to get into a site..I don't like banner adds or flashing advertisements..I hate distracting things that follow my curser around.. I can do without the loud music ( I may be surfing at night and dont want to wake anyone) Other than that, keep it simple and easy to navigate.
