Hey Everybody......
I have been conspicuously absent .....When I got back from BLADE I was freaking exhausted....I was up WAAAAAY past beddy bye for several nights having WAAAY to much fun....I was real good about the booze but I happily talked my brain into a stupor( I would do it all over tomorrow btw)......On my return I got real busy getting ready for what is becoming an every other year trip to Argentina and getting some kinda lung grunge (I thought it was allergies and maybe that is what started it} in spite of the slows from Mr. Grunge I had an incredible time near Tucoman hunting dove and pigeon for four days with a bunch of friends from the cutlery world and friends of theirs....Great outfitters, and great companions-a good story going on every waking minute- and as usual fantastic hunting....One day we hunted a roost with an estimated two MILLION birds.......
We flew back to Buenos Aires for several days of knife and antique militaria hunting.....Bill Adams who started Atlanta Cutlery and was partners with the late Hank Reinhart is one of the most knowledgeable guys in the world on Sheffield Bowies and knows a great big bunch of stuff about cutlery in general and is a fascinating companion who has many contacts in Argentina.......We spent the four days as a guest of one of his collector buds at a lovely hotel his family owns.....Mr. "A" is a MOST gracious host and the Accomodations and food were really fine....The highlight of the BA portion of the trip was an evening with Mr. "A" at dinner with his lovely family and a peek at a truly fine collection of Sheffield Bowies, old Argentine blades and some nice modern stuff from Europe and the U.S., some custom and some factory....A most pleasant evening spent with people of real charm.....
Argentina BTW is a REAL knife culture.....The well equipped Gaucho carried up to four knives ---A Falcone or short sword, an Argentine "Bowie" ie . large camp knife, a utility blade and a steak knife......They have the great good taste to still revere carbon steel and they rehaft older blades forever...... Our Friend Jorge Reyes a Knife maker and silversmith extrordinaire does a lot of that....He was kind enough to guide us around BA.....A great guy and very talented....I scored three blades...A Joseph Rogers utility blade with silver work by Jorge, a very nice custom utility blade and a smallish American blade with a jigged bone handle which is pretty old(have not done the research yet)......Dinner with Bill and our bud Randy, Jorge and his lovely intended at Francis Mallman's BA restaurant....Culinary bliss.....Argentina is a carnivore's heaven and Mallman is their god.....Belch, urp rumble......aaaah.......
Got home still grungy just in time for the Fourth which is both a secular holiday at our house, but I really think of the birthday our founding as a religious celebration of the creation of the greatest engine for human good in the history of our race....Got antibiotics early last week and am finally "back at it".......
Gonna be a pretty busy month....I am headed to The AG Russell "Knife Event" at the end of the month.....Great show and small enough to really see everything and make a lot of new friends and spend quality time with old ones......KaBar will have a booth this year at Bruce Voyles' Spirit of Steel show in Knoxville the first weekend in august....I will be manning the KaBar booth with The Moose and if we are lucky Guyon.....Hope to see you all at one or tother.......
All Best....
