What every first timer should have

A thread I saw on here brought this question to mind. Suppose you're a first time user looking for your first knife combo. You don't have a lot of money to spend on customs or higher end productions but you need to have one fixed blade and one folder. What would you suggest that would cover all possible bases and uses? Kind of like what every knife user should have.

Go down to WalMart. Buy a Buck 110, a Buck 119, and an SAK Tinker or similar. You'll be set for most things. Or, if your municipality is not 4" blade friendly, something by Kershaw or the Spyderco Native, or one of the shorter Bucks.

If you can order something, go with a Mora and a basic lockback of some sort. If you were ordering from Ragnar, you could go with an EKA.

An also pick up an Opinel- order it if you're ordering, or buy it at Williams-Sanoma.

Any variation on the Nessmuk trio, modern or traditional. Ole George there knew what he was talking about, and he had all his bases covered. That's the best answer I could give on what "every first timer should have" since people's tastes and daily activities, blade usage are so vast and varied.

For a first time user I would recommend a Buck Pathfinder plus either an SAK or one of the Byrds. Not real pricey and will do most things folks might want a knife to do.

I would say a Spyderco Delica, a Mora, and a Leatherman Wave or a cheaper model.

Good idea for a thread.

Defininitely a delica/endura or mini griptilian/griptilian!

The delica/ endura are great knives, ergonomic, light(both delica and mini griptilian are 2.6 ounces), have slim profiles, excellent steel vg10(if not the best) are fairly easy to take apart and reassemble, have great customer service and the wave delica is one of my personal favorites.

The griptilian has one of the coolest and fun to use locking mechanisms I have ever seen, fills you hand more(its wider), has good steel 154cm and in my opinion is very nice looking. I just ordered the d2 steel mini griptilian and the mini ritter is another one of my favorites.

Either one is well worth the money they cost.

If you go on ebay you can get a delica or mini grip for around $50.00 bucks.

Victorinox swisstool and Fallkniven F1. Not the cheapest, but it will cover all the bases.

my first real folder was a sog flash tanto...i know it goes aginst most "rules" in that it being AO and tanto and what not however i figured i might as well get one knife like that so i can get it out of my system :D With that said i am going to be picking up a Fallkniven A1 later today for all my hunting/camping/survival needs...i would say if you are really content with buying an acutal knife for use spend the few extra dollars and get something that will last...the Fallkniven is a tad pricey but i know im getting quality and will be able to use it hard without worrying about it breaking so the price tag is negligible. Would you rather save money n buy a $30 dollar knife from wal-mart that last for a year or spend the money and get a great knife that lasts your entire life?

For the absolute cheapest combo, I would go with a opinel or a SAK of some kind and a mora. For utility and versitility, I'd go with a delica/grip and a ka-bar. For a rediculously expensive first-time combo, I would suggest a sebbie and a busse.:p

Perhaps a 3" blade and a full sized folder?

Spyderco Delica 4 Serrated

Spyderco Military Plain edge

and of course a SAK of your choice, even if it's a classic for your keys.

Or Mora + SAK + Buck 110

Everybody should have a Buck 110 and a Mora and a SAK.

But I'm more likely to have S1 + Native + SAK with me.

Nothing's for everyone, so we all have to sort this stuff out on our own.

I've had great luck with a Victoronix Tinker (not sure which one) and supplement it with locking folders and small fixed blades as wants or needs dictate.

Fixed Blade: SOG Field Pup, RAT 3, SOG Seal Pup Elite plain edge, Bark River Aurora
Folder: SAK Adventurer or Soldier, Queen Stockman or Trapper style, or Buck 110.

Totally agree with the Delica for a locking folder on a budget that has great utility. For a good little high utility slipjoint I would have to suggest one of the new silver alox SAK soldiers ($20 at ace hardware). They are my personal favorite SAK. For a fixed blade slicer I am at a loss, maybe a queen with D2 steel. They are fairly inexpensive and even though the grinds are a little asymmetrical they are excellent using knives.

New Alox? They've always been that way.

Spyderco native and a Mora. Great knives that will cut almost all the bases. Add a SAK tinker and everything is covered for less than $100.

I think that a multitool plus a fixed blade would do better than a folder and a fixed. Don't get serrations on the fixed blade: the multitool will have a blade for that sort of cutting. For me, the folder is a proxy for the fixed blade during daily carry, plus it's a possible self-defense tool (I also have a handgun carry permit). I'm no expert. These are just my choices. I do think, though, that everyone interested in maintaining a survival mindset can appreciate the utility of a multitool.
