Was looking at the G10 handle on my Military and was wondering what it is exactly and how it is made. Anyone know?

Hey Zombie. G10 is a composite material. e-glass (similar to fiberglass) is layered in a press. Then an epoxy is mixed up and put into the press with the glass. The press closes and applies pressure until the epoxy is hard. This is an oversimpliffication, but it will give you a general idea.

Then the sheets are removed and handles are cut out of the sheet (we use a lazer). The handles are then processed with CNC equipment milling out the nesting for the liner, milling the outside chamfer, reaming the holes and milling the holes for the stop pin.

How come e-glass is used instead of s-glass? I thought e-glass was developed for electrical aplications, while s-glass is for high-strength structural applications.

If you want to have some fun, take your G-10
handled knives and place them under a black light. For some odd reason certain G-10 will turn green under a black light, some won't. Don't know why. People at work thought I was insane when I started pulling knives out of all my pockets to stick them under the blacklight at work.

Hi Carlos. Probably because G10 came from the electronic circuit board industry.
