What exactly is 'Griptilian' ?

What's the straight poop on Griptilian? What is it? Is it another name for rubber?

Enquiring minds want to know.
 
Griptillian is just the name of a knife made by Benchmade. The handle for it is actually more along the lines of just being plastic.
 
This is my 555 Mini-Griptilian.
There are many like it, but this one is MINE.
My 555 Mini-Griptilian is my best friend. It is my life.

a made up name of a folding knife (more of the handle). "Grip" for how textured it is and not slippery; tilian is old english "to strive"? (who knows)
It's handle/scale is a type of plastic but feels great in the hand, and a darn good blade and lock system "Axis" ;)
 
A Griptilian is probably one of the best knives you can buy in the knife world, especially at $65 for the Mini version. I'm guessing it's a play off the word "reptilian" but I don't see many reptile-like features on the Griptilian except for the grippy handles, which I guess could be looked at as a reptile's scales. Just my observations.

Go buy one!

It's still plastic. That's why I don't like the Grips, especially considering the fact that you can get the Nitrous Stryker or the 710-D2 for not a whole lot of more money...

As in twice as much? Plus, D2 is not for everybody, but 154cm is a good compromise in a premium steel. Grip's generally cost 50-60 and change, 710 costs 105 and change (usually more) and the Nitrous stryker is in the 99.95 range. Now if you are talking the D2 Grip from Cabelas, well you do pay a premium, but because its from Cabelas.

I suggest you get one before the species is kaput.

Noryl GTX is not plain plastic. Noryl GTX, made by GE, is an engineered polymer blend, meaning that several different polymers are blended together in a specific ratio to give a specific combination of properties. It is available in both fiber reinforced versions as well as versions without fibers. I do not know what version Benchmade uses.

According to GE, in comparison to nylon (used in FRN handles), Noryl GTX has superior dimensional stability, lower water absorption, and better heat resistance. Whether the superiority is enough to be noticeable in a knife handle, I do not know. But it should be at least as tough as FRN or Zytel. "Plain plastic" it is not.
